10 Things That Will Help You Survive V-Day

It’s that one day of the year where people who are single are pitied or pity themselves. Ok, maybe it happens on Christmas, as well. And at weddings. And sometimes on a lazy Sunday. But that’s about it because on the other 360 days of the year, we’re perfectly fine with living a happy single life. Since I’m an expert on being alone on Valentine’s Day, here are some tips to get through it. If you’re single and don’t give a damn about V-Day, good for you. I’m a little cheesy like that. I’d like a card and a nice date night, but only if you’re also nice the rest of the year.

Valentine's Cards

1. Get super drunk the night before, so you’ll have a hangover from hell.
Of course, this works best when it’s a weekend and since this year’s V-Day is a Sunday, pop some bottes. I often end up hungover on February 14th because by birthday is on the 13th. This year, I’m planning a get-super-drunk-pajama-party which will probably lead to a hangover. Since I’m one of these people who does not wish for a partner next to me when I feel sick, this is a good plan.

2. Make yourself a present.
We all deserve to be pampered, once in a while and there is no harm in treating yourself to something nice. It doesn’t have to be big because if we had a partner, it wouldn’t be about how big the present is, either. It’s always the thought that counts, right? Unfortunately, since my birthday is close by, I usually lose out on V-Day. Although thinking about it, if I hadn’t dated douchebags, it would’ve probably been different. Bring me chocolate, a rose and your Netflix password, and you’re safe.

3. Eat all the junkfood you can find.
I am a huge lover of food. I love healthy things and of course, the unhealthy ones, as well. When you’re single on V-Day and it makes you a little miserable, just eat whatever you want. Pizza, chocolate, candy, ice cream and whatever else you can think of. Food just has this magical power of consoling someone who doesn’t feel great. I have mozzarella sticks waiting for me.

4. Make plans with friends.
If you have a good time with lovely people, you won’t feel alone. Last year, I remember having the best day ever, just roaming around the city with two friends of mine. The best part was to actually get photobombed by a couple. Oh the irony. Make plans with your single friends (I have like two) or with those who couldn’t care less about a holiday that makes the greeting card industry never go broke. Luckily, my friends don’t care about it.

5. Make a list of all the reasons why you’re happy to be single.
On those rare occasions you question your single life, remind yourself of all the reasons why it’s great to be by yourself. If you’re willingly single like me, list all the reasons why you decided to turn away from love, for a while. Weeks. Months. Years. Reason number one: I am awesome and I deserve someone who is equally awesome, which is super hard to find. So instead of dealing with more jerks, I’ll just stay by myself.

6. Binge-watch Disney movies or your favorite show.
For some reason, watching Disney movies is my answer to everything. Whatever the situation is, it helps. The music, the characters, the cute animals – I could do it all day, everyday. But if you’re not so much into Disney, which makes you a super strange person to me, there are enough TV-shows or movies that you can watch, as well. It may be the perfect day to finally get your own Netflix account. Admit it, you were thinking about it, anyway.

7. Go on a date.
If you’re crazy like that, you’ll go on a 1st-Valentine’s-Day-Date. Man that sounds awkward but I’m sure that some people do it. If you don’t want to be alone, I’m sure you’ll find someone on Tinder who will willingly get together with you, last minute.

8. Tell the people in your life that you love them.
Just because you don’t have a partner, doesn’t mean you can’t spread some love. I mean, it’s not cool when you just do it this one time a year (same goes for relationships) but if you just love to spread love, do it. I wish, I would’ve though about this earlier. Well, maybe I’ll send out some hungover texts to my babes.

9. Have a normal day.
If it’s not a weekend, you don’t really have a choice anyway. And you’re not gonna take a day off, right? Just do everything you would normally do. Work, cook, go shopping and just don’t care about what day it is.

10. Watch the movie Valentine’s Day.
I mean, why not? Unless you just feel like crying when you watch other romantic relationships, this is probably not a good idea. It’s not the greatest movie in the world but I think that all the different stories are pretty cute. I am actually in this movie, disguised as Jessica Biel playing Kara Monahan, my future self. I’m pretty much already her, minus the job thing. Like Kara likes to say: “My closest relationship is with my Blackberry, Thank God it vibrates.” One of my favorite quotes, ever. And I really want an anti-Valentine’s party with a Piñata and all. In the end though, even Kara finds someone she actually gives a chance so there is hope for me.

  1. Not going to lie….This sounds like every weekend to me! Which is exactly what you should do anyway! Love me some junk food and I love the idea of going out on a date last minute. I think I’ve gone out clubbing before on v-day and it was fun! Also, that film is terrible but definitely would watch it! Taylor Swift in it is the most cringe thing in the world!!! Fab post :) xxx
