Yes, I Play Pokémon GO And I Don’t Care About Your Judgement

I’m pretty sure that by now, everyone has heard of the new game app called Pokémon GO and the worldwide obsession that has erupted within moments, since it’s been released. There have been the craziest stories all over the internet, positive and negative, and the hype with this game is just pure craziness but I think it’s awesome. I never played Pokémon before. I always thought that one or two of them were super cute – can I please catch or develop a Glutexo (Charmeleon)?! – and that’s about it. I even sold my brother’s cards on Ebay. Still, when I heard and read about Pokémon GO, I was intrigued. I mean, how cool is seeing these creatures on your desk, in your bed or anywhere else?! It just fascinates me and I’m not technology geeky enough to fully understand how it works. I showed it to my mom and it freaked her out.Pokémon GOAnyway, I’m slowly getting the hang of it and I catch myself driving around, looking for Pokéstops. Since I live in a small village, there is not much action going on here. It definitely makes a difference where you live. If I was in a big city, I’d be roaming the streets, all day, meet other people, hang around in parks and enjoy the nice weather, but it’s just not happening here. So while I was was looking for a Pokémon, a boy with a skateboard approached me. He was maybe 12/13 and he asked me if I was looking for Pokémon. He addressed me with “sie,” a form that is very polite and used when talking to people who are older than you, who you don’t know, in the German language. It always makes me feel so old when kids do that but I’m 28 so it happens. I was wearing a batman shirt though and playing Pokémon. I’m obviously a cool adult who doesn’t take herself too seriously.

Initially, I thought “what the hell are you doing here” – it was just one of those moments – but then I decided to let him explain some things to me. He also told me that he got into trouble for going through other people’s backyards but he can get away with it, since he’s a kid. I’m not planning to do that because I would be super embarrassed if I got caught. I’m 28, after all. One women already thought I was delivering pizza. But I have to say, it must suck to be a kid, playing this game where I live. I mean, where do they get new pokéballs? I can at least get into my car and drive somewhere to collect what I need. Poor kids.

With all the fun, I really need to go to more places and catch more of the little monsters, though. Next week, I’m going to visit my grandma for a few days and we will definitely go for lots of walks and I will bring a portable charger. The company better have sorted out their bugs and server issues, by then. I’m just not so much into walking around all alone so that will be nice and if the app doesn’t work, I’m going to throw my phone against a wall. Unfortunately, nobody I know is playing so I have to do it by myself, like pretty much everything else, anyway. If you’re reading this and you do play, let me know and we’ll meet up. I could also need a lesson or two because I don’t fully have a clue what I’m doing. I haven’t had the guts to fight yet, but I’m team red so I better get my act together. I’m also hatching an egg and I’m curious to see who will jump out of it. I’m kinda hoping for Pummeluff (Jigglypuff).

Pokémon GO

My generation grew up with Pokémon. My brother collected the cards, constantly watched the TV show and fought match after match on his Gameboy and I’m sure lots and lots of others did it too. So why is it so terrible that these people want to relive a little part of their childhood, today? Did the rest of you just end up becoming too old and too serious for playing a game, or are you just too lazy to leave the house? And please don’t tell me it’s because of the whole data panic. The moment you use apps, create accounts, check into places on Facebook, use GoogleMaps etc, you’re doomed anyway, so calm down.

I guess some people just want to be haters because they think it’s cool to be against a hype. Let me tell you one thing, I’m usually the anti-person when it comes to hypes but do I have to constantly comment and criticize? No, I don’t. I just roll my eyes and just let people be. The problem isn’t the game, the general problem of this world is the missing acceptance of one another. So wake up, hating isn’t going to make you any cooler. The thing is, when a new FIFA of Grand Theft Auto game is launched, and people disappear in their rooms for a week, it’s perfectly fine. At least Pokémon GO get’s you out of the house, gets you moving and fresh air isn’t the worst thing in the world. But I guess for some people, isolation is so much cooler and makes more sense.  If you care so highly about people playing this game or not, you should ask yourself why it bothers you so much. And I bet at least half of the highly opinionated people secretly play it, as well. They’re just not confident enough to admit it. Whatever your reasons are, just accept that others are having fun with it.Pokémon GOBefore you throw the negative aspects at me, let me say this. I don’t support people endangering themselves or others because of the game. I don’t support people using the game to commit crimes. I don’t support roaming through backyards or buildings you’re not allowed in. Other than that, I think it’s a fun and good way to combine the love for video games and some fresh air, no matter if you’re young or old. There is really no harm in running around outside and catching some monsters, just watch where you’re going.

So if you see me at the super market, or anywhere else, catching a Pokémon, hurting nobody but my phone battery, just let me do my job.

Childhood Memories

When I was two months old, my parents and I moved to America for a year. I cannot remember any of the events back then, but as I grew older, I looked at all the pictures that were taken. The older I got, the more I became interested in the fascinating country, were everything seemed to be different from what I knew. Fortunately, my father was transferred back to El Paso, Texas and of course, my family and I went with him. Therefore, by the age of six, I finally experienced living in the U.S. and soon realized that I did not want to ever leave again. Until today, I remember everything I experienced during these three and a half years and I often look back cause these years were definitely some of the best and I’m grateful that I was able to experience, all of it. Life events like this have an impact on your whole life and I feel like it has always had a good one, on me. Early on, I learned about adjustment, different cultures and people and how important it is to meet the world with an open mind and an open heart. And it never hurts to learn another language, at a young age. The English language has stuck with me, ever since, and also had a huge influence on my future, especially when it comes to school and university.

Childhood Memories

Because of my father’s job, we had to move a couple of times throughout the years and I never really had a place that I called my hometown. But when I got off that plane 22 years ago, I had one. I know this sounds a little bit cheesy, but that was just how it felt. Ok, maybe not exactly during the first few weeks, but very soon it did. After all, we had a pretty house with a huge swimming pool, shops that were open 24/7, and the day care I went to, even had a Nintendo! How could you not fall in love with it? After overcoming my initial shyness and anxiety, cause that’s how I was a child, I felt home.

Ok, I also ran away from day care once because it was too much to handle with everyone talking to me in a language I didn’t speak or understand, but after that I was fine. I learned how to swim and ride my bike, discovered my passion for fast food, hot pockets in particular, got another dog, went on awesome vacations to California where I visited Disneyland, and fell in love with the TV-program, which broadcasted The Mickey Mouse Club and amazing music videos on VH1. This influenced me in early childhood years and gave me my passion for singing, dancing and all kinds of music. My childhood in America gave me everything I needed to be a happy child and just thinking about it now makes me smile.

Childhood Memories

Childhood memories

From the moment we moved back to Germany, I missed living there and I also missed being tan. I thought about my time living abroad very often and definitely saw my future back in the States one day, the place where I was always happiest. I experienced so many wonderful things that I will never forget and I cherish every single memory, until today. Therefore, everything from that time is very important to me and I’m glad that I kept a lot of it, like toys, pictures, cards and so much more. I even have an address sticker from were we lived, not that I need it because I know the address by heart and probably will, for the rest of my life. Even after all these years, I still have a lot of my childhood treasures and whenever I find something I had forgotten about, it fills me with joy and great memories. I also regularly look at some of the items, like my self-made booklet with all the Lisa Frank stickers I collected as a child. It’s nothing big but it’s the little things that matter, right? I mean, how could I get rid of all these fabulous things? After all, I’m a 90s kid and we definitely had the coolest stuff.

Today, all kids seem to play with are computers, mobile phones etc. Children should experience playing with Lego, collecting stickers, dressing their Barbie dolls, reading great stories and so much more. I loved all that so much that I miss the things that I don’t have anymore. Therefore, I often catch myself searching for some things on Ebay and spending my money on toys. I just can’t help myself, letting go is definitely not my superpower. And thinking about it, it’s my mom’s fault anyway, since she gave some toys away. Thanks mom, I could save so much money if I didn’t have to re-buy part of my childhood. You still owe me a couple of Polly Pockets that I never got over losing and have already started to re-collect. Just kidding. Not about the re-buying part, though.

Yeah, I could claim to keep all these things because I want my future kids to have them but that’s just not it. I’m really not into having kids and the stuff is only for me. However, if I ever do end up pregnant, I at least have great toys that the child may or may not be allowed to play with. Fine, I’ll give her baby Tumbles because clearly, I’m having a girl. She’s lucky I didn’t keep all the fancy 90s clothes, although I think they were sooo cool. Kids today would probably not want to be caught dead in them, though. But my brother and me looked adorable in matching neon lycra shorts and all my Disney shirts were super fab.

Childhood Memories

Anyway, I think it’s important to always keep parts of your childhood with you. The older we get, the more we tend to forget parts of our past, but I really hold on to those fabulous years in the States, even though my plans for moving back have changed, a little. No matter how old you are, never forget the good times and it’s not silly to hang on to things that once meant the world to you. I would fight anyone for my favorite Barbie doll! Being an adult can be sooo boring, so always keep a piece of your childhood soul inside of you.

For all the youngsters asking themselves why these photos have such a bad quality, they’re scans. We didn’t have digital cameras back in the 90s. ;)

20 Facts About My Disney Life

Disney Life
I was tagged by the lovely Hannah from Courage and Kindness to tell you a little something about my Disney life. If you love Disney as much as I do, go and give her blog a visit and read about her Disney life, here. As always, feel free do this tag if you would like to share some Disney magic with us.

I’ve been a huge Disney fan ever since I was a child and even as a grown-up, it never left me. As a matter of fact, the older I got, the more obsessed I became with it. So here are a few things from my personal Disney life that I want to share with you.

01. I once added an extra day per week to my university schedule, only to be able to attend a Disney class and it was one of the best seminars I ever had. Of course, I was little miss know-it-all but I couldn’t care less. I mean, if watching Disney movies is part of the course preparation, hell yeah will I be prepared.

02. So far, I’ve visited Disneyland Paris once and Disneyland California twice. I like DLP more, especially because it has a much better castle. I mean hellooo, you can actually go upstairs.

03. When I get the chance to meet and take pictures with characters, I don’t care about how old I am. I’m usually the only grown-up in line, aside from parents. I even met Belle and Cinderella at the Disney store in New York and I loved it.

04. The topic of my BA thesis was “Disney’s Depiction Of Women” and I also wrote papers on “Disney’s Pocahontas and the Misrepresentation of History,” as well as one about “Walt Disney World Resort – The State Within a State.” Furthermore, I also held a presentation on the Disney town Celebration. Yes, you read that correctly. There is a Disney town you can actually live in, it comes with a lot of strings, though. I tried to include Disney into my studies, as much as possible.

05. I have Disney swimming pants from when I was a baby and they’re the cutest thing, ever.

06. When I finished my A-levels, my mom took me to Disneyland Paris as a graduation present. While others got laptops, trips to New York or other “grown up stuff,” I got to spend a weekend at the happiest place on earth.

07. I saw the Lion King musical live on Broadway and I still get goosebumps just thinking about it. That musical truly is a piece of art and I can only recommend spending that money. Thanks again for the ticket, dad. One of the best gifts ever.

08. My brother has all the Walt Disney Classics on DVD and I hate him for it. My collection is close, though.

09. When I was a kid, I had a tape recorder  and constantly sang and recorded “Colors Of The Wind.” My parents told me I couldn’t sing (HARSH!) but maybe they were just annoyed by hearing the song 2746 times. Nowadays, my family begs me to sing at parties etc.

10. Meeting Jack and Sally was my favorite encounter because they were on top of my list and just super nice. They didn’t only pay attention to the kids, they actually let me take pictures first because I was there first, trying to ignore all the parents just pushing their children toward the characters, regardless of other people patiently waiting. Age shouldn’t always be the winning factor, after all, we all paid lots of money to be there.

11. When I throw little birthday get-togethers for myself, I usually have Disney Princess plates, cups, napkins, decorations etc. I’m 28.

12. I honestly thought about trying out for becoming a Disney Princess but I don’t think I could handle all the kids, the 24/7 smile plastered on my face and wearing a costume in extreme heat or cold.

13. I sleep in Disney Princess sheets.

14. When I visited the Hollywood Walk of Fame, I pretty much only took pictures with the Disney related stars, like Walt Disney, Mickey Mouse, Tinkerbell etc.

15. I’m obsessed with collecting stuffed animals from Disney. I’ve got like 40 of them in various sizes and I can’t get enough. They’re just sooo adorable.

16. We used to sing “Reflection” with our school choir and it was just beautiful. It’s such a great song.

17. A friend and me wanted to see the Beauty and the Beast musical in Cologne and when it was time to go inside, they told us that we had tickets for the wrong day. Stupid me messed up the order. Long story short, we ended up seeing it but with a lot of drama and reorganizing.

18. When I was an au pair, my baby and me listened to Disney music in iTunes radio, all day, and it was awesome. I hope it left a permanent impression on her. When she’s older, I also want to take her to Disneyland.

19. I used to have a male friend with whom I bonded a lot over Disney with. We always said we’d go to Disneyland together. Then he went with someone else. We’re not great friends, anymore.

20. Belle is my absolute favorite character and I even have her costume. I also hope to have a library like the one in the movie, sometime in the future. Her love for books is one of the reasons why I love her the most.
