More Books I Want To Read

I don’t know how the weather is where you live, but it has been nothing but raining for what feels like whatever in my village. I absolutely love fall, but I was hoping for more of a golden October and not this gray, cold, and rainy situation.

Books I want to read

However, as I am trying to focus on positive things, it is the perfect weather for lots and lots of reading. I always like to put together these little posts where I list books that are waiting to be read, but some just stay on TBR-list forever, cause I often just don’t take the time. I currently write a lot, so books often don’t stand a chance, which doesn’t mean I don’t buy any. I always tell myself to first read a big chunk of those in waiting, but I just can’t help myself. I already have so many new ones and am not even close to finishing the last list I put together. I did read some of them, though, and enjoyed them very much.

Anyway, here are some new babies I couldn’t not pick up and will hopefully be read rather sooner than later. I’ve already started one but I have to admit, when a book doesn’t really pull me in after like 50 pages, I lose motivation and go back to ignoring all the wonderful pieces of literature I own. But I’ll, of course, give it another shot.

Queenie – Candice Carty-Williams
Little Fires Everywhere – Celeste Ng
Midnight Sun – Stephenie Meyer
Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race – Reni Eddo-Lodge
F**k No – Sarah Knight
Brief Answers to the Big Questions – Stephen Hawking
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes – Suzanne Collins
The Kissing Booth Road Trip – Beth Reekles
I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings – Maya Angelou
So You Want to Talk About Race – Ijeoma Oluo
The Subtle Art Of Not Giving a F*ck – Mark Manson

The Autumn Reading Tag

It’s day 8 of Blogtober and to be honest, my brain feels pretty fried today. Why do I never properly prepare for things like this? Anyway, I thought about doing a fun tag because answering questions is what I need right now. So the lovely Aoife from Pretty Purple Polka Dots helped me out with a suggestion, and boy, she has tags for days on her lovely blog.

So today, I will give you my answers for the Autumn Reading Tag. It’s currently the perfect weather for getting cozy with a good book, and it’s my favorite season. I also like that the tag isn’t all just about books because honestly, I’m currently not up for scanning the hundreds of books I have, to find the answer I like. Cause there are so many books, I can’t remember everything.

Bitmoji Fall

Hot Chocolate – What is your comfort book?
Something easy and probably directed more toward younger readers than my 32-year-old self. One can never go wrong with reading a Baby-Sitters Club book. It’s just simple and entertaining. I also love my book of Mother Goose Rhymes.

Pumpkin Carving – What is your favorite creative outlet?
Writing has always been my number one. Ever since I was a little girl, I was seen sitting around, scribbling something into a notebook. Writing always helps me get things out, and it just makes me feel better, and it’s fun. But I have to name scrapbooking as well because I can hardly explain how much joy it gives me to finish a new page that I carefully put together.

Falling Leaves – Changes that appear bad but you secretly love
I honestly can’t think of anything right now, cause I don’t think I love something in secret. I’m pretty much upfront about everything. I could probably think of things that appear good but I secretly hate but that’s not the question. I can’t think of anything specific. However, I do think that sometimes things happen, and at first, they may seem bad but end up being good. Not the best answer, I know.

Pumpkin Spiced Latte – Something you love that others tend to judge
Ummm, Keeping Up With the Kardashians?! Although I am sure lots of people love it but don’t want to admit how entertaining it is.

Bonfire Night – What makes you explode with joy?
Time with my best friend. I honestly don’t see or hear her enough, and I miss her a lot. Growing up, it was so nice to always be in class together and also living just a few minutes apart. Even if we do nothing, it’s better than anything else. Also, the sounds my doggy makes when he’s sleeping. And merry-go-rounds. And of course, starting a new book and the story just completely pulls you in and makes you want to read all night long.

Fright Night – Favorite scary book or film
I honestly don’t read or watch really scary things. As a teenager, I watched Scream and Nightmare on Elm Street and stuff like that but nope, not a fan. So I’ll just go with Hocus Pocus here. Not scary for me as an adult but simply amazing. Also Gone Girl. I remember watching it with a friend in San Francisco. Leaving the theatre, it was pretty late and we just couldn’t seem to catch a bus and it was just all a really weird feeling.

For book, does YOU by Caroline Kepnes count? I mean, film and TV series for me were not really scary but rather thrilling. Although, the whole thought of it is pretty scary. Yeah, I’m logging in that answer.

Halloween Candy – Favourite thing to eat
I think the easier thing to ask me would be about things I don’t like to eat. But I have to go with pasta. Always and forever. Though the question is more about sweets, right? Definitely chocolate, preferably with nuts. Or gummy coke bottles from Haribo. Snickers, Rocher, After Eight. And Doritos. Not candy, but they’re big love as well.

Scarves – Your autumn “must-have” accessory
Boots, hat, and a faux leather jacket. I’m not much of a summer fashion person, so this is totally my jam now.

Fire – A book or film that burns your soul
I’m not entirely sure what the correct answer to this question is, but I’ll interpret this in a negative way and am reminded of a book and the matching movie that I was forced to read and watch back in high school. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Absolutely ridiculous. Maybe I should give it another try now that I’m older, but I absolutely hated it.

Toffee apples – A book or film that seems one thing but really has a different inside
You mean like judging a book by its cover, or by what people say of it? Well, now I do have to get up and look at all my books. Because I have no clue. Or maybe I’ll just go with a movie on this one…

I would say “Uptown Girls” with the lovely Brittany Murphy – may she rest in peace – because it obviously seems so superficial, but is actually not. It shows that there is often a deeper reason for why people act a certain way. It’s always so easy to judge someone but understanding them is a whole other story. It also demonstrates what happens when you are willing to open your mind to new things and that you can always learn from other people, no matter the differences like age, societal status, or lifestyle. That being said, I know what I’m watching this weekend.

If These Mattresses Could Talk

If these mattresses could talk, they would tell wonderful stories. Because these aren’t just mattresses. These are an important part of growing up, and they are full of memories. And now they are gone forever. Can you believe how dramatic I am over two mattresses?

There is a good reason for that. For over twenty years, and probably longer than any mattress should be kept, these two mattresses have been in our household. They were part of a bed that was easily put together and functioned as a guest bed. My parents bought it when we were living in the States, what feels like a million years ago, and have stayed with us ever since. The reason these mattresses are so special to me and the rest of the family is because pretty much every person we know has slept on them. And now we recently said goodbye to them, and I couldn’t help myself but take a photo and even cut out a piece of it. We’re selling the house next year, so lots of things just have to go. But seeing them lying there on the side of the road ready for pickup made me really sad, but also made me remember wonderful moments from the past 25 years.

These mattresses remind me of the wonderful times, my grandparents visited us in Texas. We always had the best time living there and experienced some great vacations together. And I’m sure I snuggled up to my grandma more than once. They also remind me of endless slumber parties with my friends because growing up, I always had people over. I think of all the times we stayed up late, just talking about everyone and everything. When I celebrated my birthdays, my whole room was usually covered in beds and it was always the best thing. Actually, in February, my best friend stayed over because we did a whole weekend of birthday fun for me, but nothing made me happier than making her a bed and talking until dozing off. Back then, I had no idea that it would be the last time. She always got a good night’s sleep on those mattresses and has so ever since we were kids.

Also, lots of hangovers were experienced on these mattresses, which were always there after a crazy night out. Even a friend from university and one from my year as an au pair have slept on them and I think that’s just lovely. My oldest godson spent a weekend at our house a while back and of course, I made sure he’d get a good night’s sleep on these mattresses.

You know, all of these people would always have a place to sleep in my bed, but there is just something about having a bed for yourself…

I have also slept a bit on these because twice in my life, our basement was flooded and unfortunately, that’s where my room is. The first time happened when I was a teenager and I ended up sleeping in the living room for a week. The second time was actually only five years ago, and I spent some nights bunking down in my brother’s room, and we actually didn’t kill each other. When we were younger, he used to grab one of the mattresses and spend the night in my room, where we used to play this game of humming and guessing songs. And I also demonstrated my mad rap skills. We still laugh about it.

Anyway, now they are gone and I cherish the memories they hold. I’m soon getting my own apartment and of course, I will always have a place for my friends and family to sleep, but I guess it’s going to be on a pull-out-couch and not on these beautiful pink mattresses who have done their deed.

Photography: San Francisco #3

Last weekend, I went through all my photographs from the year I lived in San Francisco, working as an au pair, and I must say, I do miss the place. Sure, it wasn’t all just rainbows and butterflies, but it is such a beautiful city and when I see on the news what is happening to California with those raging fires, it breaks my heart for the people and for the state. I feel like in general, nothing will be as it was when this year is over, and that’s definitely scary. But wonderful memories will forever remain, and that is something we should all hold on to.

So I thought I’, share some more of my photos, even though I’ve already posted some photography posts about San Francisco. There is just so much to see, and even in a year, I definitely missed out on lots of it. But someday, I’ll go back and do more exploring. Until then, these images and the attached memories hold a special place in my heart. I miss seeing the beautiful Golden Gate Bridge, especially when it’s peaking through the fog. I miss strolls through Golden Gate Park or watching the sunset at Ocean Beach. Taking a ride on the merry-go-round at Pier 39 always gave me incredible joy, and the architecture all around the city is just stunning.
