What would you do? – Something about History and Discrimination

I just came home from the movies after watching “12 Years a Slave” and I am still completely touched. I am sad and angry and disgusted because of the cruelty these amazing people had to endure. The movie was absolutely incredible and it makes me truly happy that it was awarded with an Oscar because it deserves nothing less. Not only for the movie itself but for the story and for remembering the past. I am pretty sure that there are sill many people unaware of the things that happened many years ago. Books and movies are important mediums to teach and these happenings have to be addressed in order to learn from them and be aware of them. It made me cry really bad, although I knew what would be shown to me. I have thoroughly studied the history of the United States and I think that knowing a lot about slavery made watching the movie even worse for me. A movie can never completely capture everything. It often tells the story of a certain person from his or her point of view. In this case, it is the unbelievable story of Solomon Northup, which is not so unbelievable when you know a little about the times of slavery. Don’t get me wrong, I am certainly not an expert. Nobody is, unless you actually went through all of it. Everyone else can only watch and listen but never entirely feel what these people had to endure.

Learning about history often makes me very angry. I wanted to jump through the screen and punch somebody for being so icredibly dehumanizng. And still, I cannot say for sure what these terrible people were. Stupid? Intolerant? Smart? I watched this movie and felt ashamed for being white. How dare someone decide that white is better? That white means good? That white means being God’s child? How dare someone use passages from the bible to justify their actions? How dare someone claim to live accordingly to the Declarations of Independence where it is written that, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”  and then treat other human beings like animals? It is something that I will never be able to understand because for me, tolerance is one of the most important traits a person can have. But here comes the question.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

I am lucky to grow up in the 21st century where I can be independent and individual. I belong to a generation that should be thankful for every person who has paved the way for me to live the way I do. We often take everything for granted and forget that there is a history in every country. And we should not forget that the world still isn’t perfect, as well. There is so much cruelty going on around the globe that I sometimes think that many people still haven’t realized that it is the 21st century. I feel that some countries are even moving backwards and return to old patterns. I am German and I have been asked by people from other countries about what I think of Hitler and the Nazi regime. What do I think? I am shocked and angry and disgusted in the same way that I am now, after watching the movie. I can’t believe what people are able to do, when they are full of hate. But it is the same problem almost everywhere in the world: INTOLERANCE! Slavery mainly punished and killed African-Americans. The Holocaust mainly punished and killed Jews. Civil Wars punish and kill their own people. And why? There are often several factors that lead to a war, to societal circumstances or highly brutal time periods, but in most cases, intolerance is the most significant factor. And misinformation. Greed. Envy. And again I ask:

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

I am in a good position. I can write freely about whatever I want and spread my opinion all around the world. And of course, it is easy to point your finger at someone who has done horrible things. But I was not there. I am not allowed to judge. I can judge the initiator and maybe the first few people who followed. But then? What would I have done? My life against the life of an African-American? I don’t know. My life against a Jew? I don’t know. My life against any other person somewhere in the world? I don’t know. Would I have been brave enough to risk my life? I would like to think that I would have been, but I can never be sure. Yes, today I stand up for people who are discriminated for whatever reason. But today, I don’t necessarily get killed for it. However, I know that the world is not perfect and that there are places were I would get killed for standing up. I can’t be sure that nothing will ever happen to me in my own country, when I stand up for someone or something. People might even attack me for writing this post. But right now, I decide not to look away.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Discrimination is still a major problem all around the world and when we think about it, it is so easy to judge. We have all done it. Discriminate someone for the wrong shoes, the wrong hair, the wrong way of talking. But I feel that it is important to be aware of the fact that it is not ok. Even if everyone is doing it, it still isn’t. Who can tell if history will make a comeback or not? It has been shown often enough that if there is one person with a bad determination, he will find others who support him. That is how it always starts. An idea – as simple as that! I would like to believe that we are safe, but we’re not and we will never be. Movies like “12 Years a Slave” make me think about this and never make me forget. They will always make me angry, but I don’t know on whose side I would have been. When you are taught that this is the right and only way? When you don’t know any better? It is easy to think that there is always a choice and that you just have to make the right one.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

I can only say that people should stop hating others for their heritage, their skin color, their lifestyle. We are all human beings and we should not try to eradicate each other. We should learn from the past and the present, and we should stop wanting to feel superior to everyone and everything. When one has powers, use it for something good. Watch movies, read books and educate yourself, before judging. Enjoy your life and let others live theirs.

Dear Peter,

Backstreet’s Back, Alright! In a world like this tour live @ Oberhausen

All I can still say is OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG…..and this could go on and on forever. I mean, seeing Beyoncé in Cologne was awesome but when I saw my childhood crushes 2 days later, I was completely ecstatic. I’ve loved these guys from the very beginning. I was six years old and their debut album was one of my first cd’s. By the age of ten, my room was plastered with posters and every Nick had a heart on his cheek. I slept in their sheets and collected every snippet I could find and you know what? I still have all those things. Sheets, a blanket, pillows, movies, and not to forget my bathrobe. By now, I have the second Nick Carter pillow because gladly, my brother managed to find a new one for me, one or two years ago. Why? Because I cannot sleep without it. I am so used to sleeping on his face that I have to buy some more, in order to sleep on it for the rest of my life. I still have a heart-shaped one as well, and my mom made me bring it to the concert. I don’t know why, I just took it with me. Some people looked at me like I was a crazy person and some thought it was awesome that I still have something like that. I wish the boys could have seen it. And of course, I bought a t-shirt and I can’t wait to wear it. Unfortunately, it’s still in the laundry.

So, I went to the concert all by myself, because I didn’t know who would join me. None of my friends were big fans like me but I didn’t want to miss their comeback tour. To be honest, I don’t believe that they will do another tour with all five of them and I just had to see them live on stage, at least once in my life. So I drove all the way to the arena and I was excited as hell. I felt like a teenager and I was and still am so happy to be a true 90s kid. I wasn’t really interested in the support act because I was a little disappointed that the All Saints didn’t join the boys in Germany. I have to say though that I was positively surprised by The Exchange. A young boy band from the States who had incredible a-capella skills. I will definitely check out more of their music because they were really good…and they retweeted me. ;) The women next to me told me that before they came on stage, Brian introduced his eleven-year-old son to the audience and that he sang two songs. Unfortunately I missed seeing his performance but I did hear some of it. He definitely inherited his father’s high-pitched voice.

And then, the real show began and it was amazing. Who cares that these guys are in their 30s and 40s – they still got their boy band moves going on. They rocked the stage with their great voices and they seemed just so normal and down-to-earth. They were so funny and I especially loved when they tried to talk German. It was really cute. I’d really like to meet these guys in person because I bet you can have tons of fun with them. Especially Nick is a huge goofball. He was never able to stand still. Seriously, if a guy would continuously dance like that at a club, I would be so not attracted but he is Nick Carter, a Backstreet Boy, and my biggest childhood/teenage crush ever. He can do whatever he wants and still get the most screams from the audience. He especially loved to grab his crotch or grind his body toward the camera. I did roll my eyes a little, but I would still date him…and then tell him to stop doing that. :D

What was best about the whole concert? Their songs!!! They performed all of their greatest hits and the whole crowd just went crazy, including me. (Yes, shaky videos but I just couldn’t stand still.) They did perform some of the new songs in between, which are also very nice, but nothing compared to the classics. I also found it pretty cool that they played some instruments. I guess that is something they do, now that they are a little older. And the concert included a little acoustic set, as well. That gave them the opportunity to basically do whatever they want – like make Howie shake his ass. :D Furthermore, they were telling everyone how much they loved and thanked Germany, over and over again, and at some  point, they just started singing parts of famous German songs. We all laughed sooo hard. They did have their great breakthrough in Germany and according to them, they have a very close relationship with the country and I will just believe them. I also liked the fact that they did not try to musically bridge their breaks. They just showed entertaining videos until they were dressed in new outfits and back on stage. No matter what they did, they showed a lot of humor and just made everyone in the audience laugh. This was not a show where every second of it is planned. It all seemed so natural and they really looked like they were having fun. They also told personal things, like how they wrote certain songs together, what inspired them and more. AJ also told us about the incredibly sad loss of their bodyguard Q and we all showed respect by being silent for a bit. They told us about having German girlfriends and about how they are happy to have Kevin back. Everything they said came from the heart and made the show very personal. And I really hope they stick to their words about still being in the business when they’re 80. We will just have to wait and see.

Overall, it was a great night and a great concert and I really hope that this wasn’t their last tour. If they ever do it again, I will buy myself a ticket, as soon as possible. Maybe even one closer to the stage. Since  Monday, I’m singing their songs all day and listening to their music in my car. For me, they will always be the best boy band and I will always be a fan. My pillow will remind me of them, anyway.

“Bow down, bitches!” Mrs. Carter World Tour 2014 – Beyoncé live @ Cologne

Ok, now I finally have a few minutes to write something about the amazing concert I went to on Saturday. (and a few hours to upload all these pictures and videos) I got to see the incredible Beyoncé live on stage and let me just tell you that there is a reason why she is called the QUEEN. That is the only appropriate title for her. And when she tells you to “BOW DOWN, Bitches” you should just do it. She is one of the most beautiful human beings on this earth, she has the body of a goddess, she can sing like an angel and boy, she can move. If you ever have the chance to attend one of her concerts, just go for it. I promise that you won’t be disappointed!

I have to admit that I was a little afraid that she wouldn’t live up to my expectations. I’m still not a huge fan of her album because I think that she can do so much better. She hardly sings and I miss her incredible voice on her new record. However though, I respect her for doing something different and just experimenting because she feels like it. That is a brave thing to do in an industry, where people are always criticised and where a certain sound is expected of them. Well, she can release an album without any notice and she can talk more than sing on that record and still get away with it because she is Beyoncé. And even if I wouldn’t have enjoyed her singing, I would’ve just looked at her. I bet every person in the world is jealous of Jay-Z. He is one hell of a lucky guy! And aside from being so incredibly talented, she seems like a really nice and friendly person. I know you can never tell for sure until you personally get to know someone, but I just want to believe that she has a big heart and is not too much of a diva. She came on stage and performed like her life depended on it. And that is what I want to see when I buy an expensive ticket. I want to be entertained and blown away and she did all of it.

So, where to start. I went there with my mom, my brother and his girlfriend, who is the biggest Beyoncé fan and had pit-tickets for two nights in a row. The rest of us had seats, although we didn’t spend much time sitting, since Queen Bey got us all dancing. I got myself a t-shirt and this awesome blinking bow-headband. A lot of fans got these which looked pretty cool in the arena. I just always have to buy something that reminds me of a great night and it was really great. Unfortunately, you couldn’t get a shirt that had “SURFBOARD” on it, but ok. I bought the original tour shirt, instead. Furthermore, a little family fun is always a good idea so this made the night great, as well. We laughed a lot and enjoyed the show. Anyway,  her support act was a really cool DJ  from Paris named Monsieur Adi, who entertained the crowd for half an hour. And let me just say that I love every DJ who plays ‘Hypnotize’. So does my brother and we were praising him for that. Overall, Monsieur Adi played a cool mix of songs that really get a crowd going. Songs like ‘Talk Dirty’, ‘Ni**as in Paris’, ‘Work Bitch’ and ‘Grown Woman’ got us all moving and dancing.

After that, we had to wait for Bey to enter the stage which took a little while but nobody was mad at her when she started. (I remember another concert were people weren’t so forgiving. It wasn’t Bey, though.) And BOOM, she was there and got the party started. I guess ‘Run The World (Girls)’ is always a good idea to start with.  Gladly, she performed many of her really famous hits like ‘Baby Boy’, ‘Naughty Girl’,  or ‘Single Ladies’, and also the good ones (in my opinion) from her new album like ‘Drunk in love’ and ‘XO’. Until she performed on her chair like she did at the Grammy’s, I had a little hope that Jay-Z would surprisingly enter the stage like he did in London. Unfortunately, Cologne didn’t get that lucky but I guess we will survive. Furthermore, she had a lot of outfit changes. She looked amazing in her sparkly, skin-tight clothes and she totally owned the stage, every second of the show. I always wonder how everyone manages to change as fast as they do during concerts. And I am so glad that she went back to her long hair. The most touching moment was when she came out singing ‘I will always love you’. I remember trying not to cry because it was so touching and she sang it beautifully. The song faded into her song ‘Heaven’ and those two in combination created a very emotional atmosphere. I am glad that I was there to listen to something so beautiful. And I just have to say that I find it very fascinating how she manages to always appears classy and aesthetic, even though she knows how to grind on poles, chairs, dancers, surfboards. ;) We know what she is telling us in that song. But still, I don’t see her as a bad or raunchy girl. She’s a grown woman who just flaunts her sexiness, but always remains classy.

I have to say, that her choice of dancers added a lot to the show, as well. They were all incredible. Sometimes, I didn’t even know were to look first. All those talented hot ladies and I better not get started about Les Twins. Those two sexy dancers from France are just fabulous and she should keep them, forever. And I bet they have a great time with being the only men on stage. All of the other background dancers, background singers and members of the band are all women. I can just say it again: Who run the world? GIRLS! And I love how she praises that. We are strong women and we can be whatever and whoever we want to be. Oh, and we are FLAWLESS at any time of the day. But some twin-eye candy is never a bad idea, right? ;)

I tried to take a lot of pictures but even though, we sat pretty close to the stage, it is not so easy to get perfect pictures with a regular digital camera. So don’t be mad if not all of the pictures are perfect. But I think overall, they can show you how amazing the show was and if not, use google.  BTW, at the end of this post, you can count all the positives adjectives I used. Let me know how many you found. I’m just still blown away. I danced a lot and had a ton of fun. Therefore, excuse the bouncing videos. It was just not possible to keep perfectly still.  This show just had everything a good show needs. Stripper-poles, fire, glitter, cool dance moves, hot and talented dancers and an artist, who has it all.

So, there is really not much left to say. I can only repeat myself by saying how amazing this concert was and that you should definitely go to a Beyoncé concert, at least once in your life.

London Calling!

Sooo, this summer, I totally want to visit London. I remember learning a lot about it in school many years ago, and I’ve always wanted to go there. I never go on vacations because I never have anyone to join me. But I have set my mind on it, and I’m going, alone or not. I did ask my bff though and told her about my plans and that it would be incredibly awesome to spend a few days in London. We’ve known each other for 16 years now and we’ve never been on such a trip before. I mean, we’ve seen many places together but never only the two us. I just thought it would be great to do this, before I (hopefully!!!) head to the States in the fall. I told her that I don’t want to go there for shopping, although London has great fashion, I want to do hardcore sightseeing. I want to see it all and do it all. Madame Tussauds, a ride on the London Eye, Buckingham Palace, Tower Bridge, Big Ben and the thing I want to do most is visit the Harry Potter sets and totally visit the store and buy crap I don’t need. I want to do tea-time and maybe even try fish and chips. I would like to see Notting Hill and feel like Julia Roberts and sooo much more. We already agreed on packing our Nike free’s because we’re gonna do A LOT of walking. Maybe take the Tube and one of those red double-decker busses, once in a while. And while I was telling her, she was throwing in random prices because London is pretty expensive. But you know what? I don’t care! I mean, we both don’t have a lot of money, but I don’t have to stay at the fanciest hotel and eat like 5 huge meals a day. And we’re probably not gonna go partying or shopping. Ok, maybe a little. ;) But I really, really, really just want to see the city and take great pictures. I want to be a typical tourist, trying to make the guards move, hug every wax figure in the museum (and probably dry hump the David Beckham figure) and have some good Earl Grey tea.

I really hope that this will work out and if so, we will have a blast! After pitching the idea to her, I did what I do best: order material to plan this trip because that is what I also do best – plan things. I have travel guides and am still waiting for London themed sticky notes. (DON’T JUDGE ME!) I do have a lot of important things going on right, but as soon as I find time for this, I’m gonna plan it all. And I have to plan it as cheap as possible but I will manage that and I will make my best friend agree to all of it. I will succeed. ;) So if anyone has any tips or suggestions for must-sees, please let me know.
