My Favorite Childhood Books

For as long as I can remember, I have loved books. As soon as I was able to read, it became a great hobby. I grew up with German and American stories because I lived in both countries, so I feel like I got the best of both worlds.

I still have most of my childhood books, and what can I say: I still think they’re amazing. I can hardly find one that I didn’t put stickers on, though. There are just so many cute stories that give me lots of joy, and once in a while, it’s exactly what I need. So here are the three books I love the most.

books

Treasury of Mother Goose Rhymes
This book is a collection of many wonderful rhymes, and it is one of my favorite possessions. The edition I have is beautiful, with gold on the sides and adorable illustrations. It includes famous rhymes like Humpty Dumpty, Little Bo Peep, or Three Blind Mice, and I’ve loved it as a child. Still do. English isn’t my first language. I started learning when I was six, so these rhymes were perfect to learn more and more.

The Babysitters Club by Ann M. Martin
Oh, how I loved that series. Still do. The idea of organizing that club sounded like so much fun. I still have a notebook somewhere, where I put in pictures of kids with names and all, and I pretended to have a BSC as well. But only in my head. Anyway, the stories are so much fun. The TV series is awesome, as well – old and new.

Pipi Longstocking by Astrid Lindgreen
Well, I know her as Pippi Langstrumpf because these stories I read in German. How cool is she? A young girl who lives all by herself, with a monkey and a horse, and she has all this gold she can pay with. Her two best friends live right next door, and they go on crazy adventures together. And Pippi is also super strong. I mean, how can you not like that as a kid?!

Random Ramblings #6

My thoughts are usually all over the place, so sometimes, a coherent post just isn’t possible. So I thought, I’ll share some random ramblings with you. You know, just getting it all off my chest.

Random Ramblings #6

  • It’s Monday, and I hate it with all my heart.
  • Having neighbors is the worst. I want a house in the woods, where I hear or see nobody. I don’t get how some people never learn basic things like that it is possible to close doors quietly.
  • Going to bed early is hard work for me.
  • How do some people do it all? I feel overwhelmed a lot, and I don’t even have kids. But I guess you can have lots on your plate without being a parent. I just feel bad about it sometimes.
  • I love drinking water so much.
  • How many advent calendars for an adult are acceptable? Asking for a friend.
  • It always makes me feel bad about myself when the sun is out, and I prefer staying indoors, just hanging out. Even though I know, it’s ok.
  • Getting a housekeeper as a single woman with an apartment, no kids, who mostly works from home would be ridiculous, right? Thinking about it a lot, though.
  • I’m still not over not being on vacation anymore. I want to go back so badly.
  • Writing every day really isn’t easy.
  • It’s insane how I feel when social media crashes, and I can’t mindlessly scroll through all the feeds.
  • I can get obsessed with something in a second, and it’s not healthy.
  • Does anybody else miss chatting on ICQ?
  • Musical episodes are the worst.
  • Saw a guy using a photo of Brian Littrell on Tinder. Ummm, does he really think women in their 30s won’t recognize a Backstreet Boy???
  • I wish I could do magic. I would make my neighbors miserable. They deserve it for being inconsiderate morons.
  • Bank holidays don’t work out well for employees this year.
  • Whenever I make plans, I regret it like five minutes later.
  • I don’t know why, but sometimes I read crazy posts by anti-vaxxers, and what can I say: If you’re not able to spell the word VIRUS correctly, just really shut the hell up.
  • I wonder if the Vengaboys ever made it to Ibiza alright.
  • Bought a hula hoop months ago. Haven’t used it since.
  • I often feel bad about not texting people or making plans. Then I remember that this is a two-way street.

Goodbye Negative Nancy: Things That Make Me Feel Better On A Bad Day

Life is not always sunshine and rainbows. I’m sure we all know that. And we all have bad days. I don’t believe people who tell you otherwise for a second. But I guess, at the end of the day, what matters is how you handle it.

I definitely have bad days. Sometimes something bad happens, or I’m just in a bad mood for no apparent reason, my mental health is down, and I just want to hide or cry, or whatever. Fighting that isn’t easy. And the whole “just go outside and get a breath of fresh air” isn’t a universal solution for everything.

I guess mindset matters as well. However, it’s ok to drown in misery. It is also ok to try and fight it. Find what works for you but don’t put yourself under too much pressure. We are entitled to our feelings, and if other people don’t get it, it says more about them than it does about you.

Anyway, when I feel low, I hardly ever feel like leaving the house, meeting with people. I kinda know that ultimately, it is actually helpful for me, but I just don’t feel the urge. Unless I had plans already, I most likely won’t make any. But I do have other things that help me feel better. And I think it’s good to know what works for you.

cuddling my dog: I truly believe that animals can feel when you’re not doing great and that they can make it a lot better. Cuddling with my little ball of fur always helps. I’m so happy to have him.

writing lists: I’m a list person. I write them for everything. Work, travel, shopping, daily errands, household chores, books, and so on. It helps me to be a lot more organized, and I love the feeling of checking things off.

working on my scrapbook: It is truly one of the most fun things in my life and such an amazing hobby. Whenever I finish putting together a new page, it makes me incredibly happy.

putting on good music: It just makes everything so much better. Also, maybe have a little dance party while you’re at it.

changing my sheets: Jumping into bed with fresh sheets on is one of my favorite feelings in the world. Even better when I’m freshly showered, as well.

reading a good book: Diving into other worlds is always a good idea. Trust me, Harry Potter can cure everything.

watching a Disney movie: I don’t think I need to explain this one. My favorite go-to will forever be Pocahontas.

picking up or making my favorite food: Stuffing my face with delicious goodness does work wonders.

calling someone, and having a good talk: In case I feel like talking, I mostly call my mom. Or my best friend because she always makes me feel better.

cleaning up my apartment: This is not the most fun activity, but it does help me feel better when everything is clean and tidy. And when I’m angry, it helps with blowing off some steam.

writing it down: Getting everything off my chest by putting it on paper has always worked wonders.

taking a shower: Oh the wonders it can do to feel all fresh and clean.

binge-watching my favorite TV shows: There is never a time when I don’t watch something. I have my shows that I watch season after season, and I always find something new for in between. I may have a slight addiction, but it’s ok. I manage. I just love it.

eating junk food: Chocolate is always a good idea. And chips, gummy bears, you name it.

“The Comfort Book” by Matt Haig: How It Actually Gives Me Comfort

1

I admit, I let myself be influenced on Instagram from time to time – especially when it comes to books. I constantly take screenshots and put more and more on my Amazon wishlist. One of these books was The Midnight Library by Matt Haig and now I want to read everything he has ever written. Definitely working on that.

Anyway, the second book I’ve read by him is The Comfort Book. And what can I say, it actually does give me comfort. I can’t really explain it. The way he writes just gives me clarity sometimes, about things I think about a lot or not enough. I’m constantly trying to find ways to make positive changes to my life, and we all have things to deal with. He just finds the right words for so many things we come across all the time. I mean “No physical appearance is worth not eating pasta for” is gold. Obviously!

So this may sound a bit weird but it’s like my little bible now. I’ve highlighted so much, added stickers, notes, marked pages, and I really work with it. I found so much inspiration for writing on these pages and I love it. So this post probably isn’t the last time you’ll come across me referencing something. Quotes for days.

The book also helps me with my mental health. When I feel low about something, I re-read the pages I’ve marked, because the words help me, remind me of something, get me motivated, or whatever. It helps me focus on what actually matters.

The book is a reminder of so many things we tend to forget about: ourselves, the people in our lives, the good and the bad days, feelings, emotions, interaction with other people, and more. And it’s not shoved in your face. Matt Haig writes from his own experience and from the heart, and I guess it either speaks to you or not. And if I really have to agree with him on one thing: Everyone needs a comfort playlist. Make one now!

We fall apart to become new. We go through the dark to fly in the sun. – Matt Haig
