New York City: Times Square

(NOTE: This was an informational paper for one of my classes. Therefore, it’s a little longer but I hope you enjoy it, anyway. I added some personal comments in brackets. The pictures at the end of this article are from one of my trips and I will pick out some more from another computers, when I’m back home.)

Times SquareIn between all the skyscrapers in New York City, there is a place called Times Square. “It is situated in Manhattan at the intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue and extends from West 42nd to West 47th Streets” (Rangroo). It is one of the most visited sights in New York and all around the world. Here, one can find hundreds of people at any time of the day. (I’ve been there in the middle of the night and I was surprised, how many people were there. It’s incredible!) Surrounded by flashing lights and gigantic billboards everywhere, it is considered to be the “Crossroads of the World” with approximately 1,5 million people passing by, everyday. It is the center of New York’s theater industry and the heart of the city.

History and Development
Times Square as we know it today, has not always been like this. The place was formerly known as Longrace Square and was renamed into Times Square in 1904, after The New York Times moved into its new headquarters. The building is now called One Times Square and was the first skyscraper that was built outside of Downtown. Only three weeks later, the first electrified advertisement was placed on one of the buildings, and soon, many more followed. Even though, Times Square has undergone many changes throughout time, its characteristic trait has always been flashy billboards on the walls of the surrounding buildings. Aside from the new building for the newspaper, a new subway station was built, which made access to Times Square a lot easier than before. Therefore, shortly afterward, many theaters were built and opened around 42 street, for example the New Amsterdam Theater, which, in the future, would have a great impact on Times Squares transformation to what it is, today. Furthermore, restaurants, bars, hotels and shops were added to the setting and before the first World War, Times Square was a place of amusement and entertainment.

Even though this sounds a lot like the Times Square we know today, it was a lot different. Aside from going to the theater or visiting a bar, Times Square was the center of illegality. Prostitution, gambling and drugs was the predominant notion in this place. The situation got even worse in the postwar period, when many middle-class families moved out of the city into the suburbs. Throughout the years that followed, Times Square lost more and more visitors and with that, many theaters, restaurants and bars had to close. Only a few theaters on Broadway remained and the entertaining place turned into a center for adult entertainment. Theaters were turned into porn showing cinemas, many sex-shops were opened and as the audience changed, more and more prostitutes and drug dealers worked in the open. Also the number of homeless people increased and Times Square was no longer a secure place of entertainment. Times Square went from a symbol of city culture and diversity to a place that demonstrated the social tension and contradictions within American cities.

To change something about the situation mentioned above, former mayor Ed Koch planned to transform Times Square into a business district. During the 80’s, a general increase of office clusters was visible within the city, therefore, office buildings were supposed to be built along 42 street, as well. Furthermore, because of the Times Square Redevelopment project, the possibility of public-private partnership emerged, which offered capital to renovate for example the subway station. This would make the place more attractive to possible investors. Unfortunately, the project never became realized. Due to different problems, such as the Environmental Impact Study, resistance from surrounding or directly affected parts of the city and protest against the planned demolition of the former New York Times building, the project could not be realized according to the time schedule and soon, many investors did not want to be involved, anymore.

In New York, everything was tried to transform Times Square back into a friendly entertainment district and because of New York Times publisher Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, Times Square became a business improvement district (BID). New York has 26 of such private organizations that try to keep their districts attractive. Security guards patrol around the place day and night. Furthermore, the organization is responsible for keeping the district clean and deals with crime and homeless people. After a while, the sex industry was mostly expelled, the district was clean and more safe. Still, what was missing now, were investors that were interested in turning the place into an exciting entertainment district for people of all ages and from all over the world. What better investor can one find than the Disney Company? In 1992 the Redevelopment Project became a new chance. Architect Robert A.M. Stern who, until then, had planned various projects for the Disney Company, became Disney-Manager. At the same time, he began to come up with a new plan for what should become of Times Square. His main goal was to focus especially on entertainment and tourism and create a place where many people want to go to. His concept involved souvenir shops, video stores, restaurants and cafes and newly restored theaters. The newly erected buildings should be plastered with billboards of different height and everything should be colorful and mixed. BTW: The signs displayed on Times Square are called spectaculars and the largest ones are called jumbotrons.Times Square

“Excess has always lived in Times Square. The facelift will coordinate the design of this excess, despite the fast that ‘design principles’ officially reject coordination of any sort. Safe excess is what’s wanted – the attraction without repulsion – if Times Square is to compete for tourist dollars as a world-class destination of retail environment” (Sussman 37).

After introducing his ideas, theDisney Company was the first to express interest in investing in the project. The Beauty and the Beast had already been tested as a musical on Broadway and now, Disney wanted to renovate the historic Amsterdam Theater and use it for a new musical production. With the Disney Company in the project, more investors soon followed and the redevelopment of Times Square began. Disney is a trusted brand and conveyed a sense of safety to the project, and since is famous around the whole world and is exemplary for entertainment, it is a magnet for people. Soon, Times Square became a friendly and amusing place for people to enjoy entertainment of all sorts. Here, one can taste many different kinds of food, spend money on merchandize, see people from all over the world, visit a musical and a lot more. “The new Times Square, in its everyday life, demonstrates year-round commercial festivity which functions as a backdrop, a bulletin board for commercial messages, a corridor to the Broadway show or retail megastore of your choice” (Sussman 37).

Entertainment
Toys R Us Times SquareTimes Square offers enough entertainment for a couple of days and almost every restaurant or store is an attraction in itself. These places are constructed to attract as many people as possible. For example, a lot of people have been to a Toys ‘R’ Us in their life, but most of them do not look like the one on Times Square. When you walk into the store, the first thing you see is a 60-foot indoor Ferris wheel people can ride with. It consists of fourteen individually themed cabs, where guests can ride along with their favorite toys and entertainment characters, from, for example, Toy Story or My Little Pony. Furthermore, a 4,000-square-foot, two-story Barbie dollhouse was built into the store, where you can find everything connected to the blond plastic doll. (I totally wanted to move it.) Candy can be found in Candy Land or at Wonka and there are many more areas where especially children can find everything their heart desires. Every area is decorated with life-size characters and everything is theme orientated, which is generally something many stores or restaurants display. It is what makes many of the offered amusements more interesting because it is different from anything people know from their everyday life.

Listing everything that is offered on Times Square is impossible. The district offers every kind of food that one can possibly want. The diverse selection of international cooking makes it hard to decide but everybody can find something. Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. offers great seafood and provides the customer with a great view of Times Square. At the Hard Rock Cafe you can have some of the best burgers in the world, (well done + cheddar cheese) before or after taking a tour through rock music history. Companies like Disney or M&M have huge stores that offer every merchandize one can imagine. You want a pink M&M golf ball? You will find it at the store. ( and I have one. :) ) Inside the Times Square Studios, Good Morning America is recorded and at Madame Tussauds you can take your picture with all kinds of celebrities, made out of wax. Furthermore, a visit to Times Square should contain a visit to one of the many Broadway shows. From Lion King to West Side Story, the shows are incredible and offer an unforgettable experience. (Lion King was the most amazing musical I had ever seen.)

Times Square is also the location of the annual New Year’s Eve ball drop. The first time this took place was in 1907, and the city kept this tradition ever since. The drop takes place from the One Times Square building and signals the start of a new year. Every year, at least one million people come to Times Square to join this event, which is broadcasted around the world and counts at least one billion viewers. Usually, the mayor is joined by a special guest, that presses the button that starts the drop. Furthermore, artists perform for the audience and the party lasts all night.

Overall, what makes Times Square so fascinating is the diversity of everything that is offered. There is barely nothing that one cannot find within this district. You can either spend a lot of money or simply enjoy the feeling of it all. (And see a person carrying his Iguana on his shoulder.) Here, all people come together to get entertained and to experience a world of its own in one of the greatest cities in the world. It is called the city that never sleeps and Times Square is definitely one of the places that never sleeps.

New York, New York!

Have you ever found yourself in a place, where you knew immediately that this is where you want to spend the rest of your life? For me, this place is New York, one of the most famous cities in the world. Anyone who has ever been there knows that this city is unlike any other, and it is a fascinating experience in itself. The great variety of elements it combines have a great impact on visitors from all over the world. Even people who have not been there yet, are familiar with it because of the cities great popularity. It has been the set of many movies and TV shows. Especially shows like Sex and the City or Gossip Girl have portrayed the city from many different angles and have shown beautiful places, popular and less popular ones, the lifestyle and the fashion. What they all have in common is the fact that in New York, nothing can be generalized. Here, all people are different, no place seems similar to another and no matter which corner you turn, you always experience something new. It is famous for some of the most popular sights, for example, the Empire State Building, Central Park or the Statue of Liberty.

The first time I went there, I fell in love. I was amazed by everything I saw and I loved all of it. I know that many people have this dream of living in working in the City. This does not make it very easy to really make it. Nevertheless, I will definitely try. I’m still young, I’m currently working on graduating from university and then, I’m free to do and to be whatever I want. I will start with a year as an Au Pair, hopefully somewhere near New York and see where this may take me. A few days ago, I watched a show called Nightflight New York. It showed The City by night, underlined with great music and I just thought: I want to be there…NOW!

Anyway,I love New York so much and I think it is one of the greatest cities in the world. I will write about awesome places in the City, give some general information, and learn more about it for myself, as well. So far, I’ve been there three times and I saw so many things that amazed me. I took many pictures, tried to see as much as possible and read a lot more about it, afterward. There is just sooo much.

I hope you enjoy the information, the pictures and simply put, THE CITY!

New York City

Start spreading the news, I’m leaving today

I want to be a part of it – New York, New York

These vagabond shoes, are longing to stray

Right through the very heart of it – New York, New York

I wanna wake up in a city, that doesn’t sleep

And find I’m king of the hill – top of the heap

These little town blues, are melting away

I’ll make a brand new start of it – in old New York

If I can make it there, I’ll make it anywhere

It’s up to you – New York, New York

A little poem about love

This is a little poem I wrote back in High School for my English class. We were supposed to write a shape poem. Basically, this means to write some poem and written down, the words are supposed to present a shape. I chose a heart and wrote a little poem about love for my former boyfriend.

My heart is full of love to you.
You love me and I love you too.
You make my life complete.
Your kisses are so very sweet.

You mean everything to me,
from the bottom of my heart.
Please don’t let it break apart.

All my love I want to give to you.
Even if it’s the last thing I would do.
I am so happy when we are together.
I want to be with you forever.

My heart is a box full of love to you.
If you wouldn’t be there,
what would I do?

I love you and that is true.
All my love is just for you.

Love Poem

365 tries to make it right!

My worst date!

I haven’t had many dates and I’m still waiting for a real one. With that, I mean meeting a guy I haven’t known before, talking, flirting, exchanging phone numbers, he contacts you, you make plans for a date and then see how the story ends. (Or begins…however you want to see it.)  I’m still waiting for something like that to happen. I know, totally clichee, but even I forget about my emancipation sometimes. I wouldn’t have a problem with paying, though. All my dates were with guys I already knew and I don’t know if they count as real dates. There was definitely no ‘getting to know each other’. It was simply a little different from a normal getting together and with none of them, an actual relationship came into being. STORY OF MY LIFE! ;) Anyway, there was one “date” that I will never forget because it was really strange. Looking back, I don’t even know if I can call it a date. I was never really sure what the point of it was. Not back then, not today.

I guess, the way it began should probably be enough to call it a non-date. Instead of saying that he would pick me up, I had to drive to another village, less than 10 minutes away from mine, to meet him in the parking lot of a super market. Yes, you read that correctly! Isn’t that romantic?! :D I mean, he definitely knew were I live. He had been there, before! Well, there he picked me up and when I got into the car, two huge clouds of perfume clashed. I will never forget that because we totally overdid it. Both of us!!! At least, there was something we had in common. ;) That was pretty much it, except for working in the same place, but that is a different story.

On the way to the cinema, there was nothing that I should especially mention. At least, I can’t remember anything. He is not the best driver and when we passed a certain gas station, he told me a story about his ex-girlfriend that had happened there. As if I was interested in that! The really bad part started when we entered the cinema. We walked toward the desk in order to get our tickets. Suddenly, “my date” stepped to the side and left me standing in front of the lady who was expectantly looking at me. It took me a few seconds to realize that I was the one who had to get the tickets. I did and I paid for both of them. Those were the most expensive tickets I ever bought. I mean, don’t get me wrong. The problem wasn’t that I paid. For me, the worst part was that he wasn’t able to get those tickets. I don’t think that it was his plan to let me pay but that situation felt so awkward, I didn’t want to start splitting the payment. What made it even worse? When the lady asked if we would like to have a seat for couples, he said NO! Can you believe that? He can’t even get tickets but there, he chimes in.

After that, he was all: I’ll get some popcorn, nachos, whatever but here came the next problem. I think he was trying to save money. He was checking prices and discussed what we’ll take, over and over again. I wanted popcorn! I always eat popcorn and I would never compromise when it comes to the question: popcorn or nachos. I still don’t know what his problem was. I know him and for the most part, he doesn’t care about money, too much. And after all, he totally saved some by letting me buy the tickets. I think we ended up with popcorn and two cokes but I’m pretty sure that he wanted nachos. As far as I remember, we even had some money-saving combo.

We watched The Social Network. Not very romantic. And we ended up sitting next to someone he knew. It was all pretty annoying. The movie was pretty long and NOTHING happened between us. My body language was all “Hello, here I am…” but he preferred to cling to the bag of popcorn. It was so ridiculous. The movie wasn’t the bomb, as well, and I think, he didn’t even get all of it. I remember feeling really stupid when we walked back to the car. And when he paid the parking ticket, he said something about having raided his piggy bank for that day. Wow, thanks a lot. I guess, there wasn’t much in it.

The drive home was ok. I mean, for some reason, I liked him, even though we had nothing in common. On that drive, he told me that he had never read a book in his life. Next time I hear that from a guy, I will jump out of the car. The funniest part of it was when I had one of my hallucinations. I thought, I saw a man on the road whom we hit. I don’t know why but it was the second time that had happened to me. I’m so weird. :D (The other time was when I was driving around with my bff. She said, it had happened to her as well. We’re both pretty weird!) I held my breath and he was like: What’s wrong? I told him and we laughed about it. Then, he drove me back to my car and I drove home.

From the way he acted, I don’t think he thought of it as a date. At least, he didn’t show it. We did go on “dating”, although they were never “real dates”. We had lots of fun and I really liked him. I really don’t know why but I did. That stopped when I found out that he was playing with me, lying to me and that he actually didn’t want a relationship with me. Awful date, sad over-all ending but still, fun times.

Eurovision Song Contest 2013

Eurovision Song Contest 2013

Once a year, Europe presents its “finest” music artist and every year I think, WTF?! I mean, I love to watch this but it’s really always the same. Pretty girls with big shows and bad voices, explosions, lights, strange dancers, even stranger outfits, people who should really stop singing, bad dancers, and mostly no surprises. Almost every song sound like something you’ve heard before, but I guess that’s just what it’s about. Still, I think it’s highly entertaining and once in a while, really great songs and artists present their work. Loreen was amazing last year and she really deserved to win. I especially love those with rather simple performances that can actually sing. But everybody has a different taste in music and every culture has different sounds. So, let me just start with each artist. I sat here all the time taking lot’s of notes.

France: Amandine Bourgeois – L’Enfer Et Moi
That girl looked as if Ke$ha and Courtney Love had a child. She definitely lacked some dancing skills but the song was good and her voice was interesting. But she was one of the ladies that had a bad-hair-day today. She wasn’t the only one! It was ok but no winner-potential.

Lithuania: Andrius Pojavis – Something
He had a very Depeche Mode kind of sound but I think, his voice would have been better with some Country music. He had absolutely no idea what to do on stage and the fact that he raised his hands in the air a couple of times and one could see some skin, wasn’t very helpful, either. The song was rather simple and still, he didn’t manage to hit all the notes. For me, it was nothing special.

Moldova: Aliona Moon – A Million
She looked really great and the over-all presentation was very good. But really, a lighted dress? As if we have never seen that before. I’ve seen it a million times before but of course, it still looked good. There were some strange dancers but that is nothing new, as well. The first few seconds when only the piano was playing were the nicest. Overall though, it was good ESC material and she really hit every single note.

Finland: Krista Siegfrids – Marry Me
I think she wore a really cute and cool outfit. Wedding-Barbie in the morning, after marrying in Vegas the night before. She didn’t have the greatest voice but a lot of energy. The song was a little Avril Lavigne and probably better aimed at teenage girls. Not to forget the girl-on-girl-action at the end of the song. That was so Madonna and Britney Spears!

Spain: El Sueño De Morfeo – Contigo hasta el final
That girl was so pretty but she seemed much too nervous. Furthermore, her voice really isn’t the greatest. And she looked like a bird. A pretty one but still. She could have done better than that yellow dress. She had trouble hitting the notes but it was a sweet song. A little Spanish County music with some Scottish sounds.

Belgium: Roberto Bellarosa – Love Kills
That boy has such an awful haircut. It sounded like a mix of One Republic and Hurts. He seemed not to feel very comfortable on stage and if I hadn’t written everything down, I would’ve already forgotten about him.

Estonia: Birgit Õigemeel – Et uus saaks alguse
She is a very good singer and looked sooo pretty in that long white dress. Don’t pregnant ladies have this special glow? I definitely saw it, here. Again, I think it sounded a little Country. I had this feeling pretty often during the contest. I didn’t understand a word she sang but I really liked her.

Belarus: Alena Lanskaja – Solayoh
This was so typical for the ESC. A really pretty woman without much talent. She should work as a Victoria’s Secret model and quit singing and dancing. She was sooo stiff, I could barely watch. I’ve heard better singing, seen better dancing and well…it was just not good. Hit the runway, pretty lady, not the stage.

Malta: Gianluca Bezzina – Tomorrow
A doctor – and such a sweet one. The song reminded me a lot of Train’s ‘Hey Soulsister’ and something Jason Mraz would sing. I couldn’t understand all of his English but still, he was so adorable. I wouldn’t say the song was winning material but cute for the summer. He tried to shine like the sun, all the time. Unfortunately, he really had to fight to get those high notes.

Russia: Dina Garipova – What If
I really had goosebumps when the song started. It’s one of my favorites. Sung by a simple and sweet girl with a wonderful voice. Only proves it once again: less show, bigger voice! When the background singers joined her, it was even more touching. I loved the lanterns and of course, the song has a nice message, as well.

Germany: Cascada – Glorious
Yeah, that is the contestant of my country. Usually, I’m not a huuuge Cascada fan but I think, she really did a very good job. She didn’t look as tacky as she often does. She looked much more classy! She presented a very positive attitude and had a lot of energy. Everything went well, she hit every note and she really put everything into this performance.

Armenia: Dorians – Lonely Planet
Do all songs have a Country touch? But really, good job. I just have to say: no guy needs these girly scarfs. Anyway, a little rock never hurts. I loved the little guitar solo but somehow, I see his voice with a different style of music.

Netherlands: Anouk – Birds
Finally something different. This song didn’t sound like a typical ESC song, at all. It was a little mysterious and it reminded me a little of Loreen’s song, minus the electronic beats. The song has some really difficult notes to sing and I really liked it. I think it sounds like a song from a movie. Very unique. Melancholy on a very high level.

Romania: Cezar – It’s My Life
Oh God, I couldn’t take him seriously. I think he wanted to go to a ‘Phantom of the Opera’ casting or something like that and accidentally walked through the wrong door. It might be impressive which notes he is able to hit but that doesn’t mean that it sounds good.

United Kingdom: Bonnie Tyler – Believe In Me
I love Bonnie Tyler but I don’t know. It didn’t really touch me. When I think of ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ I could instantly start crying because it’s such a wonderful song. But this one, oh well. It’s not bad but I wanted more emotions. Still, she knows how to work that unique voice.

Sweden: Robin Stjernberg – You
Everyone on stage looked like they forgot to put on real clothes. Perform in pajamas? I don’t know about that. I bet many teenage girls fell in love in front of the tv but I wasn’t that thrilled. I mean ok, the song was good and he really can sing. As a matter of fact, he has a great voice but it just didn’t take me in.

Hungary: ByeAlex – Kedvesem
Usually, this style of music would be something I like to listen to. Unfortunately, I can’t stand the language. No offence, but that word ‘kedvesem’ just sounds really strange and it really annoyed me. Furthermore, the song was not that difficult to sing and the singer had real trouble with hitting the notes.

Denmark: Emmelie de Forest – Only Teardrops
Magical beginning. I loooved the flute throughout the song but that as pretty much it. Her fairy look was kind of cute too, although she seemed to have a bed-hair-day like so many others. I just don’t get why Denmark was the favorite act from the very beginning? I really don’t think the song is that good.

Iceland: Eyþór Ingi Gunnlaugsson – Ég á líf
Once you get used to the interesting language, it is a very pretty song. Great voice, very touching and I love that Celtic touch. Iceland was one of my favorites.

Azerbaijan: Farid Mammadov – Hold Me
Pretty boring. Not the best English and not the best singer. And that shadow thing with another guy in the box would have been so much better, if he had done it with a beautiful girl, from the start.

Greece: Koza Mostra & Agathonas Iakovidis – Alcohol Is Free
And every year there is this WTF moment. The beginning of this act was one of those. But I like Ska and this was kinda fun. Still, why these skirts and this song title??? I guess a little craziness is always good. It was funny to watch.

Ukraine: Zlata Ognevich – Gravity
How the hell did they find such a tall guy? I loved the soft tunes in the beginning of the song. The rest was good, too. She has a powerful voice and looked absolutely fantastic.

Italy: Marco Mengoni – L’Essenziale
The best looking man in the contest. Reminded me of Eros Ramazzotti. Nice! Yeah, I like it. He sings good, looks good, has a good song. Unfortunately, he didn’t know how to move. It was a little stiff. Nice suit, though.

Norway: Margaret Berger – I Feed You My Love
This was The Prodigy (verses) meets Nightwish (chorus), combined with a pretty blond singer. I don’t know. I don’t tink that it all fits together, so well. Some strange sounds.

Georgia: Sophie Gelovani & Nodi Tatishvili – Waterfall
The only duet in the contest. I thought it sounded really nice. Two great singers. I know, we’ve seen this many times before, but then again, this is just how the ESC works. Beautiful song! I thought it sounded like a possible winner song. Very romantic.

Ireland: Ryan Dolan – Only Love Survives
Please: Guys should not wear silver!!! Furthermore, I had the feeling that I’ve heard that song a million times before. Just another song that is ok and not more. And everything that happened in the back didn’t help, either. And I’m not even gonna start talking about those strange tribal prints.

Now it is over and Denmark won. I don’t get it but that’s what Europe wanted. And I also don’t get why our German act didn’t get more points. Seriously, if she would have sucked, I would say it, but she was good. And she is a huge act in Europe and beyond. I really don’t get it. Furthermore, why the hell did Germany give 12 points to Hungary? It’s really interesting how different tastes are.

My favorites were: Russia, Germany, Netherlands, Iceland and Georgia.
