Rain, Fast Food and a Broken Suitcase – Travelmonth Part Four

Travel Quote

Week 3

It is absolutely crazy how time flies. You wait so long for something to happen and when it does, it’s over in a second. After Hawaii, we were already halfway through our travelmonth but we definitely still had power for a lot more. After pretty much melting at the Kona airport because our flight was delayed, I was personally happy to fly back to the mainland. Hawaii was fun and all, but I was a little over it and was looking forward to new adventures. Our next stop was New Orleans and boy were we in for some problems. First of all, with the different time zones and three flights, we travelled for 24 hours. We got a couple of hours worth of sleep on the floor of San Jose’s airport, hiding our stuff underneath the chairs next to us, because you never know and had terrible people sitting next to us on a flight. Seriously, that elderly snobby couple, who acted like they were the shit but were obviously not able to afford 1st class, were super annoying. Rude, loud but wanted us not to talk to each other because we were sitting in front of each other. I mean seriously, we did not scream.

I can tell you that we were really happy when we finally made it to NOLA, although our happiness didn’t last very long. First of all, one of my suitcases didn’t survive all those flights. Luckily, nothing was lost or broken, but it’s definitely something you don’t want to deal with during a travel month on a budget. Then came the next shocker, our rental car ended up being a lot more expensive than I had booked it for. Seriously people, be careful, especially when it comes to insurance. The problem is that people can tell you anything they want because they know that you need the car, no matter what. Except for a handful of dollars, all my money was taken for this car. Sure, my friend would pay her part but if there would’ve been only a few dollars less in my account, I wouldn’t have been able to pay for it and we would’ve been really screwed. What a way ro start another roadtrip. And because all of this wasn’t enough, we arrived at our air bnb and didn’t feel comfortable, at all. Yes, the place was like described but something about it was just super strange. The host was nice an all but there is nothing you can really do about a weird feeling. As stupid as it sounds, maybe it was the city. And just for the record, our crazy host had a stripper pole in his bedroom.

Unfortunately we slept through half our first day because of our jetlag and couldn’t see quite as much as we wanted to, but if you want to stay healthy and sane for four weeks of travelling, you should listen to your body. However, we did get to see more of the city and it has beautiful places. Again, we didn’t feel super comfortable but that didn’t keep us from exploring. Oh how beautiful the St. Louis Cathedral is. Jackson square in general is a beautiful places to be and make sure to eat some beignets at Café Du Monde, they’re delicious. I’m sure that New Orleans has a lot of great food to offer but when the budget is tight, at least try this sweet specialty. And yes I admit, instead of spending more money on good food, we bought Disney lunch boxes and I’m not afraid to say it. Also make sure to stop by at the Hurricane Katrina museum next to the Cathedral. It was very sad but also super interesting and we were hooked on everything we learned. And if there is one thing you really, really, really have check out, it’s the Cities of the Dead. I’ve never seen anything like those cemeteries and I found it super fascinating.

St Louis Cathedral New OrleansCities of the Dead New OrleansBeignets Café Du Monde

After two days, we moved on because we had more Southern cities on our list. The best thing about it, from there on, we had nothing but hotels to stay in. Nothing too fancy but our own room, freedom and yes, a little more luxury. Trust me, all it takes to make two girls happy is a hotel room with a TV, a fridge, our own bathroom and a microwave. Heaven on earth. From there on, we didn’t even give food a lot of thought anymore. It was fast food all the way but we absolutely loved it. And not to forget the vending machines. All my life, I’ve always had a special relationship with those in hotels. They are life savers. I had also bought myself a new and much bigger suitcase and all was well. The funny thing was that it was full. Why is this funny? Because the one that broke was only a small carry-on suitcase but it worked just like Marry Poppins’ purse.

The next two stops were Jackson, MS and Birmingham, AL. I wanted to visit both because of it’s African-American history, which was one of my main interests during my studies. Unfortunately, those two places were a little disappointing. The beautiful Mississippi State Capitol was under construction which is annoying, when it’s one of the main reasons you wanted to go. I admit, the old Capitol is pretty too, though. In the end, we enjoyed ourselves a little at the Mississippi State Fair and of course we had to take a ride on the pink ferris wheel. We got a few extra rounds because the boy working there thought we were cute. He was probably around an age, where criminal charges would be filed against me, but I’ll take a free ride, any day. On the ferris wheel, just to be clear. The best part of the day was loading up on Taco Bell food and relaxing in bed, watching Disney Channel. I swear, that’s how our hotel life looked like, for the rest of the trip.

Unfortunately, Birmingham didn’t turn out much better. The main reason for going there was the Civil Rights Institute and guess what was closed because of construction? You guessed right. I mean, I pretty much researched everything and when something like this happens, it’s just super frustrating. At least we were able to visit Kelly Ingram Park because it’s outside and free but still, a huge bummer. We probably spent more time at Walmart than we did anywhere else. Not to forget Aldi, which made us freak out. For those of you who are not familiar with this, it’s actually a German company and there are some international ones in the States. Birmingham had one of them and of course it was nice to see a few familiar products. However, my awesome travel buddy found something cool to check out at night, though. Although we didn’t feel super comfortable in the dark, the rainbow lighted tunnel was worth it. I’m a sucker for Instagram worthy places.

Overall, week number three wasn’t the greatest but we still had fun and made the best out of it. Again, a hotel room, junk food and Disney is a foolproof recipe. But it was ok, we still had a few more plans on our list and if you want to find out what happened in our last week, you should come back for tomorrow’s post. If you like this one, make sure to check out part one, twothreefive and six of my little travel series and if you want to see more of New Orleans, you can check out my photography post, as well.

Rain, Fast Food and a Broken Suitcase – Travelmonth Part Three

Travel QuoteWeek 2

Aloha and welcome to Hawaii. If you expect to be greeted with a flower necklace and a cocktail, forget it. That only happens in movies or maybe in luxurious hotels. When you land in Kona on Big Island, you are greeted with the craziest heat and humidity in a completely open airport. No actual buildings, no air condition, no air. Again, aloha.

Big Island Hawaii Airport

But first things first, it has always been my absolute dream to travel to Hawaii. It was on the top of my bucket list and when it came true, it was hard to wrap my head around it. It’s just an amazing feeling when dreams come true.

My travel buddy and I landed and met up with another friend who would spend the week with us. Three girls, one mission – fun, fun, fun! The first big laugh came when we picked up our rental car. I mean yes, I basically chose all of the cars beforehand, but they always looked bigger online. So here we were again with a really small car, only this time, we were tree people with a whole lot of luggage. To be precise, three large suitcases, three small ones, three backpacks, jackets, more bags and more everything. Good thing I inherited some of my mom’s packing skills. While the theme song of Tetris was playing in my head, I managed to fit everything into the car plus three people. Trust me, we had an audience who didn’t believe this would work but I’m a genius if I may say so myself. It wasn’t the most comfortable trip for my friends, but you just have to make some sacrifices.

Loading a mini car

We had to drive to the other side of the island and during the whole ride, you pretty much see nothing. If anything would happen, like a flat tire or an empty tank, you’d be screwed. Gladly, we made it through the week without any of this happening but at least once, it was super close. This car just did what it wanted and the amount of gas wasn’t always indicated correctly but hey, a full tank only cost us like $20.

For this week, we had rented a room in an air bnb house. The first few days, we even had it all to ourselves, we were served with a nice breakfast, every morning and we’re still trying to figure out the name of an exotic fruit we were given. Who knows what we ate. The place was ok, although not the cleanest and animals were able to get in easily. Let me tell you that it’s not fun to discover that your suitcase has been conquered by a colony of ants and a huge cockroach suddenly emerging from behind a mirror definitely makes three girls scream like little babies. We succeeded in capturing him though and named him Hugo. Little green lizards joined us here and there, as well, but those were super cute.

The worst hing were the mosquitos though. Yes, something you can expect from a place like Hawaii but when all of a sudden your feet swell up and you can barely walk, it’s not fun, anymore. And this was only one of many things that killed my mood in Hawaii and I have to admit, I was a cranky bitch, most of the time. Thank you lovies, for dealing with me. Then again, I was the driver so they didn’t really have much of a choice.

Lizard Big Island Hawaii

When I thought about Hawaii, I always imagined sunshine, beaches and just the most beautiful scenery ever. Well, nobody thought about telling us that Hilo, where we stayed, was the most rainy city in all of the US. And I’m not talking about a few refreshing raindrops, I mean those raining buckets moments. Also, where the hell are beaches on Big Island? We only found ones with black rocks that you couldn’t really walk on or a few sandy areas the size of my backyard. I mean, I googled everything beforehand but I never thought we would have trouble finding a proper beach, the one thing I didn’t do research on.

And while I’m at it, if something is named a National Park, it’s not always a huge area where you can hike for a couple of hours. Sometimes, it’s just a platform to take some pictures of a waterfall or a little walkabout that takes 20 minutes to get through and shows you another waterfall. Sure, it was super pretty but also highly disappointing. When you expect to fill half a day but are done in half an hour, you need to come up with something fast and not everything works just then and there. Don’t judge me for ranting about Hawaii.

Rainbow Falls Big Island HawaiiBig Island HawaiiAKAKA Falls State Park Big Island Hawaii

Of course there are also nice things to say. One of our highlights was to zipline through the jungle. It is amazing to zip over a waterfall, 450 feet above the ground. It’s a little scary though when you realize that you’re slowing down toward the end of the line and there’s a possibility of getting stuck. One of the guides explained to me how they would get you back, which wouldn’t have been too bad, since he was sweet, but better not. Unfortunately, all three of us had this problem. I guess we were just light as feathers or simply doing it wrong. Anyway, I recorded all of it with my GoPro and just re-watching it gives me the chills. Adrenaline is awesome.

Another great thing to do in Hawaii is snorkeling. Yeah, I’m a little scared of open waters but when someone shouts “dolphins” you forget about it. It was amazing to see these animals in their natural surrounding. When they left though, I remembered that I was out in the open and couldn’t see nothing below me and after realizing what I was doing, I really had to swim back to the reef and shore. I mean there could be sharks. And more sharks. Oh, and sharks. Better safe than sorry. Snorkeling was super fun and man does a GoPro come in handy. Now we all have fun underwater videos and photos. I admit, I look like a fat wannabe mermaid but it’s the memories that count. Rumor has it, there were sightings of white whales.

Snorkeling Hawaii Big Island

So yes, this week wasn’t entirely perfect and I guess my expectations were maybe a little too high. Maybe it was the wrong island, who knows. Still, I was in Hawaii and I will never forget it. Not every trip can always be completely perfect but the memories are still great. I will always think about the dolphins, the adrenaline, volcanos and a mini car. I will think about how the first things we did was buy flowers for our hair and how my friends always braided mine.

I will remember being stopped at Target by someone asking me for a photo and thinking “this is how celebrities must feel.” Turns out, the girls were doing a scavenger hunt and needed someone with pink shoes and a flower in their hair. I was totally their girl. I wonder what ever happened to that photo. And I will never forget how we made it to the airport with our last drop of gas. We even have a video that shows a little panic and a lot of blinking lights. I’m sure the car was happy when it was done dealing with us. And of course, I almost got a ticket in the last few minutes because I was accused of almost running someone over at the airport. I can assure you that it wasn’t true. I mean, three people would’ve noticed something like that, right?

Rain, Fast Food and a Broken Suitcase – Travelmonth Part Two

Travel Quote

Week 1

Our travelmonth started in the beautiful city of San Francisco, where I was lucky enough to spend my year as an au pair. My friend got in from Connecticut, the night before, so that we were able to experience this adventure, together. I showed her around the city and said goodbye to some of my favorite places, like the wonderful Pier 39 and the Golden Gate Bridge. I know it’s super touristy, but I love all the different things the Pier has to offer and the Bridge always gave me a special feeling. I will never forget the impact it had when I crossed it, for the very first time.

And of course, I wanted to visit some places, last minute, because I was too lazy to go there, all year. It’s always the same, when you leave somewhere, you always have the feeling that you didn’t do and see enough, which is ridiculous, since I had 12 months to explore the city, but oh well. You can’t do everything but this was a good chance to squeeze in a few more things, like the beautiful mosaic steps or city hall, which is absolutely gorgeous. It was hard to say goodbye, even though it was my own decision to leave, but then again, most goodbyes are. I was also very excited though, both for the crazy month ahead of us and seeing my family and friends when the adventure came to an end. The most important thing was that I had someone by my side, who I was always able to share my emotions with and that made it a whole lot better.

Mosaic Steps San FranciscoGolden Gate Bridge San Francisco

The next day, very early in the morning, it was off to a real adventure. We had our fully loaded rental car and after sitting in there for half an hour because the navigation system couldn’t find the next destination, we switched to Google Maps and took off toward Oregon. We got a little too excited and in the first few hours, we managed to almost run dry on gas and got pulled over by a cop. Intelligent me drove too fast, while he was driving right in front of me. But hey, he was too fast, as well. He was nice though and just gave us a warning because we were German. Just stay calm, put on a nice smile and play dumb – it’s the oldest trick in the book. And trust me, I was really not speeding but the American speed limits are just so super frustrating.

Our first stop was Crater Lake, one of the most breathtaking places I have ever seen in my entire life, and I remember standing there feeling really, really happy. I could’ve stayed there forever and just enjoy the incredible silence and beauty of it, but we were on a schedule and had to get to our Hostel in Portland.

That first actual travel day was the worst because I had to drive for a total of 12 hours. Not super fun but we made it. Fun fact: Did you know that you’re not allowed to pump your own gas in Oregon? They have employees who have to do it for you. But then again, there is also a law that states that dishes must drip dry. I’m just not going to comment on that. Anyway, it was our first Hostel experience ever and I have to say, it’s kinda fun but not completely my thing.

I mean, you have to deal with things like an old complaining grandma in your room, who started ranting in the morning because of my coughing. And I’m not joking because she was literally an old grandma who needed help walking and all. She even left the room in her underwear. Also great, guys clogging the toilet and just leaving it that way, or people hanging out who don’t even belong there. I’ve never felt so safe in my life. So yeah, as you can tell, it’s not 100% for me but I think that if you commit to something like this, you can’t go around complaining, you just have to deal with it. Take the hint, grandma.

Portland was really nice and we loved to see fall slowly taking over. It was October and I hadn’t seen one colorful leaf in California. I wanted to wear boots and beanies and Portland was right for that. I especially enjoyed the beautiful Rose Garden because I really love these flowers and for some reason, they always remind  me of my grandma. It was just gorgeous but after all, Portland is the City of Roses. We also visited Pittock Mansion and the hike up a super crazy hill reminded me of how fit I am. Not fit at all. Seriously, am I 80? That cranky grandma would’ve probably outpaced me in a sec. Still, we had a lot of fun, as always and that is all that matters.

Crater Lake, Oregon Crater Lake OregonRose Garden Portland OregonPittock Mansion Portland OregonFall in Portland, Oregon

Our next stop was  Seattle, a really awesome city. We dropped off our car at the airport and managed to arrive at our second hostel by train and bus. Note to myself, I will never ever take the bus with that much luggage ever again, no matter how much money it saves me. It was terrible and I’m sure most people were not very amused. Gladly, the bus driver was nice and patient. The Hostel was awesome and much better organized than the first one. We shared the room with lots of fun girls, no old grandmas in sight.

To explore the city, we had one day and we just powered through to see as much as possible. I definitely want to visit again someday, so I can explore more of the city. One and a half days were definitely not enough. I can recommend the Chihuly Garden and Glass museum because it’s absolutely beautiful. You feel like you followed Alice down the rabbit hole and entered a new and colorful world.  And of course, you have to visit the gum wall. It’s kinda disgusting and just the thought of tripping and falling into it gives me herpes, but even us two clumsy girls managed not to touch anything.

Furthermore, you’ll  find the world’s first Starbucks in Seattle and the Space Needle is a very cool building. We also enjoyed a ride on the ferris wheel, visited Mr.Gray and ate some very delicious hot dogs. Our budget wasn’t really open to indulging in culinary excellence, but a hot dog was totally fine. While moving through the city, we saw so many other things that we would’ve loved to do but you just can’t have it all. Again, I’ll definitely be back, someday. Unfortunately we missed visiting Columbia Tower in time to enjoy a beautiful view of the city, but even an all-round planner person like me has it’s flaws. We had a nice view from the ferry, though.

So overall, Seattle was definitely one of my favorite stops along the ride because it’s just beautiful and has a ton to offer. I love places that will never leave you bored and this is one of them. Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye too quickly but our next adventure was already waiting for us. In the middle of the night, we had an Uber pick us up, because we were not so stupid to take a bus again, took the train to the airport and then we were off to Hawaiiiiiiii.

Rain, Fast Food and a Broken Suitcase – Travelmonth Part One

Travel Quote After being back home for almost half a year now, I decided to finally write about a travelmonth, across the US, that I went on after working as an au pair, for a year. It’s crazy that it’s already been six months, since the adventure ended, but I keep all those memories very close to my heart.

For some people, four weeks may not sound like much but when you don’t stay in the same place the whole time, it is. I’m not someone who just travels super spontaneously, and in this case, it wouldn’t have been possible, anyway. I had to plan for me and a friend and most importantly, I had to make sure that the two of us will end up at the right airport, at a certain date, to catch our flights home, which were booked by our au pair agency. Therefore, the whole time you are travelling, you always worry a little that something may go wrong and you end up in massive trouble.

My plan was to see as much as possible and to keep it all on a low budget. After all, au pairs don’t really earn a ton of money and you always have to keep a little for emergencies. In my case, it was my German bank account that saved us, a couple of times. As much calculating as I did, things just happened that I had no control over. But in the end, all that matters is that we made it home and had a blast along the ride.

The travel plan was:
San Francisco, CA – Crater Lake, OR – Portland, OR – Seattle, WA – Big Island, HI – New Orleans, LA – Jackson, MS – Birmingham, Alabama – Atlanta, GA – Portland, ME – Boston, MA

Travelmonth USA

As you can tell, we were all over the place and in the end, we just had to catch our final flight in Boston, no matter what. I remember my mom telling me to better make sure to get there, since start and finish couldn’t be further apart. But that’s just me. I didn’t want to do a tour that everyone does. I’ve always been a huge fan of the US and since I’ve studied American Studies, I also wanted to visit historical places that mean something to me and what I’ve learned. It was hard to decide because there is just so much to see, but I think, I settled for some very interesting places. A little bit of East Coast, a little bit of West Coast, a few days in the South and Hawaii sounded crazy but awesome and I can still feel our excitement, today.

You’re thinking about travelling for a log time? Here are three tips how to handle an adventure like this.

01. When it comes to finding a travel buddy, choose wisely. Even if the person is your best friend in the world, four weeks are a long time to constantly be with someone. You share everything with them, a bed, food, clothes and everything else, so you have to be very comfortable with that person and you want to make sure that the two or more of you will end on good terms. Just imagine constantly getting into fights with your friends when you can’t just leave. It would be a disaster.

I went with a lovely au pair friend, who is one of the sweetest and clumsiest people I know. She is also still pretty young, which wasn’t an issue, since we weren’t interested in partying, anyway. You can always have a ton of fun with her and she just let me plan and do everything and said yes at my suggestions. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not a dictator 24/7, but travelling with two strong-minded people, who have different opinions, would not end well. It was perfect, we had a blast and I still love her.

02. When you plan a trip like this, make sure to compare a lot of prices. I spent weeks of putting everything together. Cars had to be rented, we had a couple of flights and of course, you have to sleep somewhere. We did hostels, air bnb and hotels, depending on what would be the best price and ideally a good location, since you can’t afford renting a car for this long. And speaking of cars, remember that it costs a lot more money, when you get a rental for a one-way trip. Put together a list for each place, as well. It saves you a lot of time when you know where to go and you can also find great deals if you do a little research, beforehand. Yes, I was the girl with lots of lists, prices, directions etc. to make sure, we always have enough to do.

03. Take as little luggage as possible. Unfortunately, I had a lot of stuff to carry around with me, since it was the end of my year as an au pair and I just had to bring home everything I hadn’t shipped beforehand. This was definitely the worst part for me. I’m generally known for always packing too much but this was just really annoying and I learned a lot from it. It was ok when we travelled by car but luggage restrictions on flights killed me. I literally left things at every stop along the way and somehow managed to get everything important home. I was lucky that nobody ever weighed my carry-on luggage.

If you’re curious to read about how the travelmonth went and about all the things we’ve experienced, read part two, three, four, five and six.

Random Ramblings #2

Random Ramblings #2So I’ve written one of these posts in 2013 and now I’m thinking, why not make it a regular series? I mean, there is always so much on my mind that I want to share, so this is a good way to do it. And I just love random ramblings about all kinds of things. Now I love the alliteration random ramblings. I’m weird like that. Yes, I will change the headlines from ramdom thoughts to random ramblings.

  • Why do good things always happen to bad people?
  • Why the hell don’t I have more Instagram followers? I take really good pictures!
  • Urgh, how I would love to correct people’s grammar and spelling, all the time. And I’m not talking about typos. Yes, I’m one of these annoying people.
  • Seriously, learn the difference between live and life, to and too etc. Pet peeve alert!
  • I want to punch people in the face who chew gum with their mouth open.
  • Bad weather always kills my vibe.

  • I seriously never know what date it is.
  • Can somebody please come over and clean up my messy room?

  • When people on casting shows are being rejected for being too good…
  • It’s insane how today’s toys and gadgets maybe last a year and my stuff from the 90s still works in 2016. Those were brilliant toys.
  • Why haven’t they figured out a way to call bottled water “organic?” Wouldn’t that be so clever?! I’m sure someone will figure it out.
  • I wonder if I still talk in my sleep. It’s kinda hard to figure out when you’re always sleeping alone, though.
  • I could decorate my walls with rejection letters.
  • When the lady at the job center tells you things she clearly knows nothing about and all you hear is bla bla bla blaaaaa…
  • The fact that I broght my Tamagotchi back to life just shows that I have too much time.
  • So now that I would consider dating again, I can’t find anyone worth going out with.
  • I should write up some random ramblings about fu*ked up politicians. The list would be endless…
  • How long can I be without a job before I go crazy?
