Things To Do During Your Staycation

I have to be honest. A staycation wasn’t what I had imagined for my two weeks off from work, but it is what it is. Ideally, I would now be lying by the pool somewhere in Italy, or explore a beautiful city, I haven’t been before. Unfortunately, this didn’t quite work out. The problem is that most of the time, I don’t have anyone to travel with and I definitely thought about going by myself, but it’s ridiculous how expensive it is. You totally get punished for being single. And no, I don’t want to get a bed in some hostel with ten strangers. That’s just not my thing.

So I decided to stay home. I could have just relaxed and done nothing for two weeks, which is often what I opt for, but for once, I made plans for almost everyday. It’s crazy how fast a vacation always goes by, no matter what you do, but I’m making the most of it. So I’m sharing things you can do during a staycation, in case you need some tips for yours.

Bernkastel-Kues Burg Landshut

1. Go on a special shopping spree and treat yourself
As a teenager, shopping was the greatest thing in the world. Nowadays, I hate it. It’s exhausting and I feel terrible in dressing rooms with awful lighting. Those do not motivate me to buy anything new to wear. But once a year, I go to Primark. I have to drive for 1,5 hours, so I don’t do that very often. I love doing this during a vacation because I can go on a weekday, which leaves the store a lot less full. This year, I went absolutely nuts and bought three bags full of stuff I don’t need and it made me truly happy. Now, I’ can go back to online shopping. It’s important to treat yourself, so go and see what your favorite stores have to offer.

2. Spend lots of time with friends and family
Time shared with others is usually the best. Even though I didn’t have anyone to travel with, it doesn’t mean I don’t have people I can have a good time with. When I have some time off, I especially try to meet with people I don’t see too often. This time, my god son spent a whole weekend at my place and we did lots of fun activities and I always try to do something special for him. I also visit my grandma and stay with her for a bit, even though she doesn’t have wi-fi. But it makes her happier than anything else. In general, family is pretty high on my agenda. But also fun dates with friends. Ideally, you and one of your besties are on leave at the same time.

3. Pursue your hobbies
Sometimes, it’s really hard for me to fit my hobbies into my daily schedule. So when you have some extra time, it’s nice to get back into it. I love scrapbooking but instead of just having all the things out and do a page or two everyday, I don’t and pretty much leave it for vacation time. I also have more time for writing, photography, I can do a puzzle or whatever else I like. All the things you can’t really manage during any regular week – now is the time.

4. Plan activities and little day trips to fun places
No matter if the weather is good or not, there is so much you can do. Since I have a car, I can drive wherever I want to and Germany certainly has a lot to offer. Visit a zoo or an amusement park, go canoeing with your friends, play mini-golf, listen to good music at a festival, go climbing, visit a new city or one you already know and really love or whatever comes to your mind. I could just go on and on with this list.

5. Clean and declutter
I admit, this doesn’t sound like the most fun thing to do, but since I know how great you feel afterward, go for it. I still live at home but have a pretty big room with lots and lots of stuff in it. Furthermore, I have more stuff in the basement and it’s often just a huge mess. Deep cleaning my room usually takes me like two days (breaks and procrastination included) and I just don’t really have the time or nerve to do this during a work week. And boy can decluttering work wonders. It may not sound fun, but it actually is cause you find things you forgot about and get rid of things you really don’t need.

6. Go outside
Well, this is pretty rich coming from me, but it’s the thought that counts, right?! I’m definitely not the most outdoorsy person, which doesn’t mean that I don’t know about all the great things in front of my door. I guess the problem is where I live. In my super small village, you can go for a walk and that’s it. I would definitely be outside much more, if I was living in a city, but oh well. I could also go hiking, lie by a lake, ride a bike, but none of it really is for me, although I should really work on my tan. But if you love being outdoors no matter where, go for it.

7. Just chill
No matter how many plans you have, taking time for yourself is super important. When I have two weeks off from work, ideally, I return to the office relaxed and full of energy. That doesn’t always work but at least I try. I’m someone who needs a lot of me-time, and over the past few months, I didn’t have much of it. Idiot me got too motivated though, and hardly put in chill days. But I’ve already changed some plans because after only a week, I was super exhausted and that’s just not what a vacation should be about. Always make sure to put in a chill day, where you sleep a lot, maybe binge-watch a new TV show, read a good book, put on a facemask or whatever else makes you happy.

Goodbye May 2018

Goodbye May,

and hello June. Can anyone believe that half of the year is almost over? That’s just crazy. But what I am really sad about is that it’s not May anymore, cause all those holiday’s were amazing. Extra free days are the best. Especially, cause last month was still pretty stressful and I can’t put into words how over all of this I am. I love my family, but I just really want everything back to normal cause, I hate being this tired and busy. I have two weeks off this month and I’m planning on only doing things for myself, no matter what! Man, I really need to move out!

There was a lot going on in May and aside from feeling sorry for myself, I managed to squeeze in a few fun things. I was invited to one of my besties wedding and it was nice, but damn did I feel lonely. But she had her prefect day and I was happy to be a part of it. And any excuse for buying a new dress is good. I actually bought another one cause there is a wedding this month, as well. I mean, I don’t want to look the same in all the wedding pictures, so I really had no choice.

I had a nice brunch with my girls, I went to see the musical “Tanz der Vampire” which was good, but not even close to my favorites. I had a movie date and watched “I feel pretty” GO Amy Shumer and I especially loved being in an escape room. You do feel a bit stupid for all the clues you miss, but it’s so much fun. And eventually, we did make it out in time. We had a little help, but we definitely did a good job.

Sunset

I also had my grandma’s dog for a bit and I really loved hanging out with him. I definitely didn’t feel alone, but I really do not want to have a pet. Animals are super cute and all, but that’s just not going to happen. I don’t have the time or the nerve for it. But for a week or two, I’ll perfectly take care of yours. He’s a real cutie, though.

The other highlights of my month revolve around my TV addiction. It was time for the Eurovision Song Contest again and yeah, I know it’s cheesy and all, but so much fun. And of course there was the royal wedding. If you didn’t watch Harry and Meghan get married, are you even living right?! It was so beautiful and I hope they’ll be forever happy, cause they’re so cute together. I was a bit disappointed by her dress though, but every bride should wear whatever she wants. And honestly, she’d look good in a potato sack. I’m really not for marriage, but I sure as hell love weddings. And of course I got all hyped up about Meghan and started watching “Suits”. Surprise, I’m hooked. And not to forget “13 Reasons Why” was craaazyyy, but it’s so important and so good.

So that’s it for the month. May was not bad, the weather was pretty good, I did some fun things and the rest will hopefully all fall into place, soon. I just can’t wait for my two weeks off from work because I really need it and I will hopefully fill them with great memories. I got some things planned that I’m looking forward to. So fingers crossed that everything will just be fab.

Buy a new dress. Turn up the music in your car really loud and sing your heart out. Take a day all for yourself. Find a new favorite TV show and binge it. Go for a walk. Grab some ice cream and enjoy a hopefully sunny and great month of June.

Tons of love,
Hailey

Eurovision Song Contest 2018

Eurovision 2018

© Eurovision

Yesterday, it was that time of year again: The Eurovision Song Contest finale happened and brought to the stage Europe’s cheesiest acts. Although this time, it wasn’t bad and cheesy, at all. There was not one performance that made me want to cut off my ears or scratch out my eyes. I was positively surprised and love that it was a lot more about the music, because it’s one of the most important things in my life and I do prefer good quality.

So as every year, I sat on my bed with my notebook, my phone to tweet along and a score sheet (I admit, I only had it like halfway through the show, cause my laptop was OF COURSE updating.) and judged every single performance. I didn’t know any of the songs beforehand. Not even the one from my own country. I just like being surprised and unbiased.

I didn’t give out 12 points on my sheet because for some reason, I never do. I’m hardly ever so enthusiastic about a performance that I think there is nothing better, but my top 3 all had double digits. Spain, Germany and Lithuania were my absolute favorites which certainly shows that I’m into a certain type of music. All three songs were very emotional, gave me goosebumps and brought tears to my eyes. Obviously, I was a huge fan of Portugal last year, cause it just fits right in with my kind of music. I want to be touched. I want to really feel it, even if I don’t understand a word. I want to be taken on a journey into somebody else’s soul, cause that’s what music really is for me.

Eurovision 2018

Man, it’s so exciting when all the results slowly come in. And Israel won. I can live with that because for a second, I was sure it was going to be Austria and he just wasn’t that good. Netta is super cute and her message couldn’t be more right for this time and age. And it was a proper Eurovision performance. I’m really happy about a great fourth place for Germany, though. We we’re so good this year and it’s nice to see that Europe agreed. But why the hell didn’t Spain get more love? They were adorable.

Overall, it was a good show, although the opening and half time show were not really spectacular. But OMG, Kenzi from Navy CIS LA was one of the hosts. Love her! Anyway, here is what I thought about every performance and I would absolutely like to hear your personal thoughts.

01. Ukraine: Mélovin – Under The Ladder
I liked the vampire touch but it really didn’t go with the song. I want something mystical to go with that, but the music was more on the lame side. Sorry not sorry.

Eurovision 2018

02. Spain: Alfred & Amaia – Tu Canción
These two sweethearts were my absolute favorite. It only took me like five seconds to have goosebumps and I just wanted to hug them. I couldn’t understand one word, but I felt every single one and for me, that’s what music is about. It went straight to my heart.

Eurovison 2018

03. Slovenia: Lea Sirk – Hvala, ne
Her attitude was amazing. You go girl! The dancers were super hot, some part of the song like the bridge were really good but the supposed-to-be-rap part not so much. And the whole bouncy beat really put me off. Her involvement of the crowd was brave and a nice change, though.

Eurovison 2018

04. Lithuania: Ieva Zasimauskaitè – When We’re Old
This was also in my top three but didn’t do all too well. I thought she was adorable and the song also gave me goosebumps. The whole performance was so not spectacular, which worked really well. So simple, so beautiful. She has a unique voice, the background images were lovely and her giggles toward the end, when her actual husband stepped onto the bridge, were so cute.

Eurovision 2018

05. Austria: Cesár Sampson – Nobody But You
Highly overrated! I mean sure, it wasn’t terrible. I could see him singing with a great gospel choir but not as a solo artist on a huge stage like this. And what the hell were that shirt and his pants? Satin? Latex? I thought it was all pretty boring and emotionless. He wanted to be the “cool guy” of the show, but I really wasn’t feeling it.

Eurovision 2018

06. Estonia: Elina Nechayeva – La Forza
She deserved points just for wearing a dress that weighs eight kilo. It looked amazing though and I know that a lot of us want that for the next party. Can anyone lend me 65.000 Euros and an entourage to help me move around? I really like good opera singing and her high notes were truly amazing. She also looked great. That make-up was on point.

Eurovision 2018

07. Norway: Alexander Rybak – That’s How You Write A Song
He’s still a likeable guy but I wasn’t a huge fan when he won with “Fairytale” and I will never be one. He’s a damn good violin player but the dancing and everything was not really authentic. It was kind of cute and fun but that’s about it. In the end, I guess the question is though: Does he know how to write a song?! Just sayin…

Eurovision 2018

08. Portugal: Cláudia Pascoral – O Jardim
Her black dress went great with her pink hair. Unfortunately, it didn’t get me, at all. And her earrings looked like black pieces of plastic she fished out of the trash.

Eurovision 2018

09. United Kingdom: SuRie – Storm
It started of good with the crown really chiming in, but I was not a fan. I honestly didn’t think she was good enough. However, when some idiot entered the stage and took away her microphone, she handled it like a pro and deserves major props for that. But the song and all was highly disappointing. The UK can do much, much better. Can you please bring BLUE back? Thank you!

Eurovision 2018

10. Serbia: Sanja Ilic & Balkanika – Nova Deca
I really thought I’d love this for like the first few seconds. The sounds of the flute and drums were beautiful, but then it just all went really wrong. The harmonies sounded awful, those electronic beauts fully killed the vibe and the performance was terribly boring. This was actually the act I liked the least.

Eurovision 2018

11. Germany: Michael Schulte – You Let Me Walk Alone
I am not one of these people, who just support their own country because honestly, if it’s not good, it’s not good, and I’m all about the music. But this year, we were damn good. I was super touched by his song, especially because it’s about his father, who passed away. It was touching, authentic and just really beautiful and even a win would’ve been absolutely deserved. I had tears in my eyes.

Eurovision 2018

12. Albania: Eugent Bushpepa – Mall
When Eros Ramazzotti meets Prince this happens, but not on such a high level. Outfit and song were cool, it was an overall good performance, but it wasn’t anything I will remember.

Eurovision 2018

13. France: Madame Monsieur – Mercy
First off, I love their name and French is just such a beautiful language. But why the hell were they favorites? I had high hopes but was really disappointed. I thought it was so emotionless and the song annoyed me. I mean, they actually sing “My name is thank you” and I don’t get it.

Eurovision 2018

14. Czech Republic: Mikolas Josef – Lie To Me
The performance was something different but I liked it. The backpack was funny and of course the somersault at the end was cool. Apparently, it went wrong during rehearsals, so props for still doing it. The beat was fun, the singing good, the rapping not so much.

Eurovision 2018

15. Denmark: Rasmussen – Higher Ground
I like this whole viking thing and something mystical always gets me, but unfortunately, I didn’t think they were very good. It was a solid performance, nothing spectacular, so I will hardly remember it.

Eurovision 2018

16. Australia: Jessica Mauboy – We Got Love
Public Service Announcement: Australia isn’t even close to Europe! I will forever find this weird. The song was nice, the girl was pretty, but unfortunately, she was dressed in wrapping paper. Some proper background dancers and just a little more something would’ve been fitting.

Eurovision 2018

17. Finland: Saara Aalto – Monster
Man, she pulled off some really cool stunts and always kept singing, very well. Her vocals were on point. I’m just not a fan of those uninspiring electronic pop beats, even though I love electronic music. It’s almost never authentic or fitting.

Eurovision 2018

18. Bulgaria: Equinox – Bones
Doesn’t Equinox have something to do with sports? But that’s a different story. The group with fake Sia had some truly great vocals, at least individually. I’m not sure if I liked them all together. But they seemed really cool and all so different and I’m all for it. Also really loved the outfits.

Eurovision 2018

19. Moldova: DoReDoS – My Lucky Day
Finally, there was some real fun going on on stage. That wall with the optical illusions was amazing to look at. The song was quirky and fun and made me want to shake what my mamma gave me.

Eurovision 2018

20. Sweden: Benjamin Ingrosso – Dance You Off
He thought he was the son of Michael Jackson, Justin Timberlake and The Weeknd. He was not. Not even close. He wanted too much and I was just annoyed by his voice and dance moves. I know that Sweden always get’s a lot of love, but often enough, I really don’t understand why when it comes to the ESC.

Eurovision 2018

21. Hungary: AWS – Viszlát Nyár
Well, I’m not big on heavy metal, but I have lots of respect for everyone who sings in their native language. And with the singer, someone finally used the whole really awesome stage. He was good, his band mates had trouble hitting the notes, though.

Eurovision 2018

22. Israel: Netta – Toy
Ok, it was fun. Not the greatest voice or song, but the message was an important one and I thought it was great that she was not an ESC-cliché singer. She was plus size, quirky, flashy and she was a true boss lady on that stage. It was fun and fitting for the contest. #I’mtakingmyPikachuhome

Eurovison 2018

23. Netherlands: Waylon – Outlaw In ‘Em
The singer was a part of The Common Linnets, which I absolutely loved and I generally enjoy that country guitar sound. But crumping dancers??? They were a bit irritating.

Eurovision 2018

24. Ireland: Ryan O’Shaughnessy – Together
The most upsetting thing about this performance is the fact that two guys holding hands is reason enough for countries to not broadcast it. It’s infuriating. The more important it is for this to be done and shown. There are not just heterosexual couples on this planet, so we shouldn’t just see boys and girls together. It was so great to hear the applause, when the two guys crossed the bridge. The song was really sweet, but I think the visual message sure was more important.

Eurovision 2018

25. Cyprus: Eleni Foureira – Fuego
Great body, great outfit, great hair. The song was ok, the voice was ok and this was the most typical ESC-performance of all. A pretty face with a little talent who can shake her booty. Sure, she was truly on fuego, but totally overrated.

Eurovision 2018

26. Italy: Ermal Meta & Fabrizio Moro – Non Mi Avete Fatto Niente
I honestly wish, I could’ve understood the message of the song. But to be honest, I was not fully paying attention, anymore. After 25 artists, I needed a little break and the performance wasn’t one to capture my full attention.

Goodbye April 2018

Goodbye April,

and hello May. I love this month because it starts with a holiday and has a few more throughout the next few weeks. And who doesn’t love some extra free time, right? I want to use it for fun activities and also for organizing my life. There is something truly satisfying about decluttering and putting everything into place. I could definitely use another room or two to make everything fit perfectly, but since that’s not happening, I have to get rid of things.

I started with my closet, which was too full. When you’re hangers barely move and all your ironed clothes get wrinkled, it’s time to make a change. I do have to find a new spot for all my purses now, but my closet and dresser look great on the inside. Still, there is so much more to do. Especially the basement is ridiculous, since I stored my stuff pretty much everywhere. “Collecting” lies in my family.

cherry blossoms

The highlight of my month was being back in journalism school for two weeks. I learned so much and had a great time with the group. How much I would love to work with these girls, on a daily basis. I’m sure we could accomplish great things. And it’s just so lovely to be taken care of with food throughout the whole day. You save a ton of money, don’t have to worry about cooking, shopping or anything else.

Even though being in class all day is super exhausting, we truly had a great time. I laughed so much and a little break from everyday-life is always a nice thing. I found it interesting to realize that working for online media would probably be something really fitting for me. I always wanted to do print media, which I am currently doing, but I love including social media and all the possibilities the internet gives you. So who knows what lies in the future.

There was of course a family day for Easter and also a little get-together with my girls which unfortunately wasn’t what it used to be, but it was still nice to see everyone. I did a barbecue with my dad and a chill night with a friend but otherwise, April was super quiet. I didn’t do much on weekends, mainly because I was constantly exhausted and still had to take care of a lot of things for the family, since everything is still not back to normal. So it was housework, sleep and watch all my TV shows, most of the time.

I’m sure May will be lovely, though. So far, I’m invited to a wedding, there is a brunch and a musical trip planned and my grandma’s doggy will be here for a week or so. I love having a cuddle partner for a little while and he definitely helps me be more active. Also, it’s going to be my first time in an escape room, where my detective skills will hopefully come in handy. And not to forget: Eurovision will be on. So this month will definitely be more active and I’m looking forward to everything.

Post pictures of lovely flowers on Instagram. Make a new playlist for your car. Prepare a nice meal for your family. Enjoy beautiful sunsets. Ignore your phone for a while. Say “thank you” more often. Throw smiles around like confetti. Declutter your life. Never take yourself too seriously. Don’t be afraid to speak your mind. Enjoy May.

Tons of love,
Hailey
