10 US Things I Miss After Moving Back To Germany

First of all, happy 4th of July to everyone in America. Hope you’re all having a fabulous day but I’m sure there will be great celebrations, all over the place. I myself have lived in the States for several years and therefore have a close connection to this country. Because of that, I thought I would put together a list of 10 things that I really miss about the States, now that I’m back in Germany. In general, I feel like every country has its good and bad things and I’m sure that for every person these are different. This is from my personal experience and about what I love and miss about the US, no matter if big or small.

American Flag

01. Shopping on Sunday’s
This is something that will probably never happen in Germany. We take our opening hours and work free days, very seriously. This was something I loved the most when I was living in the US because Sunday is the ideal shopping day. When I was working as an au pair, I worked all week, occasionally on Saturday in the evenings or I had to take classes on Saturday’s, so it was great that there was another day with open stores. I know that other countries offer this, as well, but certainly not where I live.

02. Paying everything with a card
I hate carrying around cash. Swiping your card is just so much more practical. I admit, it’s also more tempting and it can happen that you actually forget about what you paid, but I really miss it. Yes, you can also pay with card in Germany, but not everything and everywhere. Usually, you need a certain sum in order to use it. Ever since I came back, I constantly run out of cash and it annoys me that I need to go to the bank to get more because we also don’t have cashback. These things would make my life so much easier.

03. Lunchables, Doritos, Lucky Charms and more
Of course, I miss certain food items. I’ve missed them after leaving the US, as a child, and now I miss them again, after leaving as an adult. I could give you a long list of food and beverage items that I would love to have, right now, including yellow Gatorade and hot pockets, fruit gushers, pizza Lunchables, Nacho Cheese Doritos and so much more. And not to forget the amazing slurpees from 7/11. Of course, I also missed German products when I was living in the States but I guess, you just can’t have it all. Can somebody please send me a care package?!

04. Feeling less judged
I’ve always felt like in America people care far less about what you wear and how you look. It might vary from place to place, but I’ve never felt like being stared at for wearing bright colors or something a little over the top. I know that open-mindedness is more popular in big German cities, as well, but where I live, you’ll find a neighbor judging you just for wearing a skirt. Trust me, I’ve been harassed, talked about, made fun of so many times in my life, just because of what I wore or what my favorite color was. If people would just stop constantly getting into other people’s business, we would all live much happier lives. Everyone should just quit pointing fingers at other people.

05. Uber
I know that some cities in Germany have Uber but it’s definitely not as popular as in the US and definitely non-existent where I live. I really miss the convenience of it and of course their good prices. I don’t go out very often but when I do, I wish I could just Uber my way around.

USA Cake

06. Public Wi-Fi
I feel like I had so much more access to public Wi-Fi back in the States. I’ve spent so many hours at airports and was always able to log onto my computer and get some blogging done, surf through social media or catch up on my favorite TV shows. Furthermore, you have it in supermarkets, cafes etc. and I feel like here in Germany, you have it nowhere. It may be different in bigger cities but when I landed at Frankfurt International Airport, they had nothing which was super annoying.

07. Holiday Celebrations
If Americans know one thing, it’s how to go all out on holiday’s. I always loved to see houses brightly decorated during Christmas time and Thanksgiving is a great festivity to witness, as well. Halloween has always been one of my absolute favorites, ever since I went trick-or-treating as a child. Some Germans try but it’s just not the same. When I saw pumpkins and witches all over the stores in America, I always felt like buying it all because it’s so much fun. And I also love costumes. Same goes for Valentine’s Day. I remember giving and receiving cards back in our American day care and it’s just a super cute tradition. And of course, the 4th of July celebrations are always fun, as well. In comparison, most German holiday’s are super boring and basically don’t give you more than an extra day off from work, depending on the branch you work in.

08. The English language
I really, really miss the English language, in general. I’ve learnt to speak the language when I was six years old and it has always been a very important factor in my life. I prefer to read and write in English and after my year as an au pair, I’m definitely over watching German television or movies. When new films hit theatres, a part of me doesn’t even want to watch it because it’s not in English and therefore not as good. And TV shows that I watched in the original language, I cannot watch in my mother tongue, anymore. I literally can’t stand hearing other voices. I wish, I had more English-speaking people around me but there is just nobody there. I could finally go back to speaking normally, since I often forget words when I talk in German because the English ones stuck with me, but oh well. If I had to choose one language for the rest of my life, it would definitely be English. I could talk to so many more people from all around the world which is more important to me than my mother tongue.

09. Fastfood Chains like Taco Bell and Panda Express
Of course we have fast food over here but definitely not as much as in the US. I don’t even know where the next Subway is because the ones that were near us all closed down. That’s how well new things work over here. We have Mc Donalds and Burger King but everything else can only occasionally be found in bigger cities. I especially miss Taco Bell and Panda Express because they’re awesomesauce and we simply don’t have them. Even the next Starbucks is over an hour-long drive, just to give you an impression of where I currently live. And I definitely wouldn’t mind eating at In-n-Out Burger, right now.

10. All the stores that we don’t have
There are just some stores in the States that we simply don’t have in Germany. I mean seriously, can someone open a Disney Store or a Victoria’s Secret place somewhere around here? I just don’t get why we don’t have it. People would go nuts for it. But most of all, I miss Target. When I lived in San Francisco, we had one really close by and I went there pretty much every week, so technically it counts as a hobby. That’s probably where I left most of my money, aside from Disney. Same goes for Walmart, which I was obsessed with, as a child. I mean, there is nothing better than places where you can simply get everything. And they don’t cost a fortune. I wouldn’t mind having a Forever 21 nearby, as well, although I was told that Germany actually has a store or two, but they’re super far away. Well, I guess, I really need to move to a more fun place.

Master of Arts – Two Years Later

Master of ArtsOn this exact day, it’s been two years since I graduated from University with a Master’s degree in American Studies. I had my final oral exam on that day and then it was all over, just like that. Goodbye five years of hard work, lots of sweat and tears. It was a crazy moment but I was so proud of myself and excited for what the future had in store for me. When I started my academic studies, I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to do with my life. To be honest, American Studies was pretty much my plan b and it turned out to be something I really, really loved. I was always closely attached to the US and the English language was and still is very important to me, so it definitely made sense. My family wasn’t too amused about my choice but I told them that I would rather do something I love, even though finding a job would probably not be the easiest task, than choose a safer path and be unhappy. And I usually do whatever I feel like doing, anyway.

When I started, I wasn’t really sure what to expect but a mix of language, literature, culture and media seemed to be absolutely perfect for me. I was so invested in my studies that I really didn’t care too much about my social life anymore but for me, it was totally worth it. I finally found something I was good at. I wasn’t the girl that nobody had high hopes for anymore, the one that everyone thought was stupid and only interested in superficial things. I was good. Maybe a little too ambitious, but I was finally good. People asked me questions or were impressed by something I came up with. I constantly got complimented on my english speaking skills by lecturers and it felt great, since I wasn’t used to any of it. I admit, sometimes I regret not giving college-life an actual chance but it was nothing like in movies and downright bored me. Finishing my degree, as fast as possible and with an a-average, was definitely more important to me.

American StudiesI always thought that by 30, I would have my life in order, moved out, started a career and would be living a life that get’s me to where I want to go. I am turning 30 in 1,5 years and for the past 8 months, I’ve been living back at home with no job and I could decorate my walls with rejection letters. I’m sure that somewhere deep down, my family would love to throw a little “told you so” into my face. For every academic subject, the university provides a description, including a whole list of fields you can work in, but reality is a whole different story. However, I think that one of the main aspects that got me to this place was that my original plan totally went up in flames and I ended up feeling completely empty and clueless about my future.

For some years of my childhood, I grew up in the States and I never really got over moving back to Germany. The US always felt like home and I really wanted to go back and start my life there. Of course that’s not the easiest thing in the world, but I was always sure I would find a way to make it happen. Since I didn’t get the chance to study abroad during my time at university, I decided to work as an au pair and I was pretty sure I wasn’t coming back. I wanted to check out my options, apply for jobs, get in contact with people but I realized pretty quickly that it didn’t feel right, anymore. I no longer wanted to stay and build my life there. The thing is, when you hold on to a dream and plan for almost 20 years, only to find out that it no longer feels right, it knocks you down and it hurts. So I was facing going back home, after finishing my year abroad, having a degree in American Studies, a subject not many people in Germany are very familiar with, having no proper contacts and not even a concrete plan of what to do. However, I did know that I wanted to become a journalist but was also aware of the fact that nobody would be waiting only for me, but the harsh reality of our current job market really crushed me.

Master of ArtsSo two years later, I have to say that a university degree doesn’t guarantee you anything and that although it’s a requirement for lots of jobs, practical experience is often much more important, something you don’t really get during your studies. And even if you have the proper qualifications, you still won’t get it. Unless you know the right people or had rich parents who were able to sponsor a million fancy internships, all around the world, in most cases, it can take forever to find something that works for you. Until then, you will have to try not to take rejection letters personally, even though they are annoying and never include a proper explanation of why a company doesn’t want to have you. You just have to hang in there. Also, don’t let other people tell you what is right and what is wrong. Don’t let anyone pressure you into compromising your life because it’s not working out on the first try. There is usually a reason why you do what you do and if you have a goal that you worked toward, don’t just let it go. Even though it is hard and yes, super annoying, I would probably not change much if I had the chance to do it all over again. I had my reasons and I just need to hang in there, a little longer.

Goodbye June 2016

Hello July and goodbye first half of 2016!

Honestly, I would really love for time to slow down a little because I feel like I can’t catch up with it. One month after another passes by and my life still seems to be stuck, which definitely freaks me out. I could really use a pause button, right now. But since I always try to enter a new month on a positive note, I will reflect on all the good things that happened in June, which, unfortunately, are not that many.

I finally got invited to a job interview for a huge company and I’m still super stoked about it. It was my first one and it went extremely well, with me leaving with lots of positive feelings. The only problem is that the possible job doesn’t start until October 2017, but I will do an internship with them and see where it takes me. What is even more important to me though, is the fact that the people I spoke to were amazing and finally gave me back some confidence. You see, when you graduate from university, you’ve done internships, you spent some time abroad and pretty much did everything in your power to get where you want to go and then nothing happens, you get super frustrated. The more rejection letters came, the more I felt like a failure. But when the editor in chief of a huge magazine, from one of the biggest media companies around, tells you that you’re the ideal candidate, that they think you’re resumé is interesting and that they love that you went abroad to work as an au pair, you know it means something. It was such a relief to hear these words and it reassured me that I’ve done nothing wrong and that the job market is just a bitch. And yes, I felt super fancy in my new business outfit.

Other than that, I honestly don’t have much else to tell you. There was nothing really going on and I didn’t leave the house much, since most of my friends are too busy with their own lives. I’ve given up on asking people to have some fun with me, since they always say that they’d love to and then, I never hear back from them. I’m done with running after people and I don’t want a pity party, either. If people want to hang, they have my number. Good thing I’m very good at being by myself.

Speaking of people, I just have to say that the Twitter community has blessed me with so many lovely people. Even though I haven’t met any of them in person, they’re a huge support system and I really think that they are genuinely great people. I really hope we can all meet, someday. No matter if I’m having a good or a bad day, if I have questions or just want to have a fun chat, these people will help me and that is a very lovely thing. It definitely helps me feel less alone. And before you roll your eyes because they’re online friends, go check it out for yourself. I mean, when I snapchatted our flooded basement, which includes my room, in which I currently can’t hang out in, my Twitter friends were those who texted me and asked if I was alright. Except for one person, who I know in real-life, nobody else did. This is just one example of how sweet this community is. I don’t have to mention names because they know who they are. Love you guys!

So here comes July and I hope it brings better weather. I really don’t need another flooded basement and sunshine always helps with the good mood. I will also see Rihanna live in concert, for the third time, and there are a few parties I would like to go to. And I’m definitely looking forward to getting a new carpet because I really need my room back. It’s my happy place and it’s the place I work best in. It’s also super annoying that my stuff is all over the house and I really miss my lovely bed. So sorry for the lack of blog posts and Twitter interactions in the past week, but I was busy cleaning, drying, organizing and so on.

I hope that everyone is having a good summer, despite the annoying weather, and that the second half of 2016 will absolutely rock. You deserve it, I deserve it, the whole world deserves some happiness, in these dark times. The thing is, if bad weather and a flooded basement are the worst problems we have, we should consider ourselves lucky because there are terrible things happening around us and we shouldn’t forget how blessed we are. May the beautiful souls that this world has already lost this year rest in peace.

Spread love, tell people that you love them and do something nice for someone else. It will make both of you feel better.

Photography: Mainz #2

A couple of weeks ago, I finally visited my best friend in Mainz. We definitely don’t see each other enough so it was great to have some hang out time, together. Of course, I brought my camera and took some pictures when we went for walks with her dog or shopping in the city. To be honest, it’s a little funny that I did this now because I used to live in Mainz, when I went to university there. I never gave the city an actual chance and never really loved it there, although it is actually very beautiful. I don’t know, I can be weird. Anyway, I saw a few corners that I’ve never been to before and enjoyed it, very much.

It is definitely a nice city to visit because it offers lots of cultural things to do and is located next to the Rhein, which is especially nice in the summer. You’ll often have the chance to visit popular events like the wine festival or the beautiful Christmas market. Mainz is also one of the biggest celebrators when it comes to Karneval and if you like it a little more chill, roam around and enjoy the beautiful architecture.

Quite a while ago, I posted another photography post with a handful of pictures of Mainz but this post definitely contains a lot more. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t ideal but still, I managed to take a few pretty snaps. I hope you enjoy them any maybe you’ll even visit, someday.

How To Incorporate Clueless Quotes Into Your Everyday Life

As long as I can remember, I’ve always been a huge fan of collecting quotes, especially from movies. I always felt that if you include some into your life, you become a part of it and it becomes a part of you. It was something I especially did as a teenager. As mentioned in my post “50 Thought I Had While Watching Clueless,” I used to put together handouts with a bunch of quotes on them and gave them to my friends so we could all talk like that. Especially Clueless was a super big deal for me and it just has so many funny lines, I just had to put together an online version of my teenage handouts. This movie definitely gives you a lot of great lines that work a great variety of situations.

01. Whenever someone wants something from you  that you’re totally not cool with.

Ugh, as if!

Clueless GIF

02. When you feel like extending your vocabulary.

Sporadically. It means once in a while. Try to use it in a sentence.

03. When you and your friends need to share thoughts on people’s attractiveness.

Survey says?

04. When you think someone’s super hot until you’re standing in front of them.

Monet: It’s like a painting, see? From far away, it’s okay. But up close, it’s a big old mess.

Clueless GIF

05. Whenever Trump says something stupid.

May I please remind you that it does not say ‘RSVP’ on the Statue of Liberty.

06. When you feel uncomfortable or disgusted.

I had an overwhelming sense of ickiness.

07. When you don’t get what you want.

I don’t get it. Did my hair get flat? Did I stumble into some bad lighting?

Clueless GIF

08. When you have an important test, interview etc.

Where’s my white collarless shirt from Fred Segal [enter any item and brand that works for you]. It’s my most capable looking outfit!

09. When you feel like shaking your head at a guy’s outfit.

So okay, I don’t want to be a traitor to my generation and all but I don’t get how guys dress today. I mean, come on, it looks like they just fell out of bed and put on some baggy pants and take their greasy hair (eww!) and cover it up with a backwards cap and like, we’re expected to swoon? I don’t think so.

10. Pretty much anytime. Just don’t forget to make a W with your fingers.

Whatever

Clueless GIF

11. When you actually have no clue but are winging it like a pro.

Do you have any idea what you’re talking about?
No. Why, does it sound like I do?

12. Whenever some annoying person tries to call you.

Don’t tell me those brain-dead lowlifes are calling me again.

13. In order to check the intoxication level of your friends, see if they know how to roll with the homies.

Rollin’ with the homies.

Clueless GIF

14. When people once again start blaming everything on the media.

So until mankind is peaceful enough not to have violence on the news, there’s no point in taking it out of shows that need it for entertainment value.

15. When you arrive late to something and people call you out for it.

A watch doesn’t really go with this outfit.

16. When people ask you over and over again why you’re single.

I’m not a prude, I’m just highly selective.

You see how picky I am about my shoes, and those only go on my feet.

Clueless GIF

17. When you describe your bff.

She’s my friend because we both know what it’s like to have people be jealous of us.

18. When guys do something stupid.

Well, obviously this boy is a complete moron.

19. When people question your fashion choices.

What the hell is that?
A dress.
Says who?
Calvin Klein.

Cluless GIF

20. When people are mad at you for being late or forgetting something and you want to make them laugh about it.

Tardiness is not something you can do on your own. Many, many people contributed to my tardiness. I would like to thank…

21. When you’re on your period or have to use it as an argument for something.

I was surfing the crimson wave. I had to haul ass to the ladies’.

22. When you’re thinking about dating a fashion victim., think twice.

He does dress better than I do, what would I bring to the relationship?

Clueless GIF

23. When you spend days staring at your phone, remember this.

Christian said he’d call the next day, but in boy time that meant Thursday.

24. When someone criticizes your driving.

You try driving in platforms.

Hello? There was a stop sign!
I totally paused.

25. When you feel like being bitchy.

What do you think of Amber? [enter any name]
Hagsville

Clueless GIF

26. Instead of calling someone pretty.

Betty

27. When someone is totally out of line with their outfit.

Do you prefer fashion victim or ensemble-y challenged?

28. When you’re in a bad mood or stressed out.

Oh my god, I am totally buggin’.

Clueless GIF

29. When people don’t get how awesome cartoons are.

That’s Ren and Stimpy [enter any cartoon show]. They’re way existential

30. When you want to give or hear some crazy dating advice.

I sent myself love letters and flowers and candy, just so he’d see how desired I was, in case he didn’t already know. And anything you can do to draw attention to your mouth is good. Also, sometimes, you have to show a little skin, this reminds guys of being naked and then they think of sex.
